Hello everyone,

I recently bought some Ikea Malm furniture and now want to secure it to my hardwood floor to ensure safety and stability, especially since I have small children at home. However, I want to avoid damaging the hardwood flooring, so I’m looking for a solution that firmly anchors the furniture while protecting the floor.

Are there any proven methods or products to securely fasten Malm furniture to hardwood floors? What are the key points I should keep in mind? Does anyone know of specific fastening systems or adhesive materials that work well?

Thanks for your experiences and advice!

Hello linopau0,

first of all, it’s great that you are thinking about how to securely fasten your Malm furniture to the parquet flooring without damaging it.

Basically, there are different approaches:

1. Furniture anchors or wall fixings: Many recommend securing the furniture to the wall using special brackets. This is usually safer than attaching directly to the floor.
2. Anti-slip mats or pads: You can place these under the furniture; they provide good grip and at the same time protect the floor from scratches.
3. Special tapes or hook-and-loop fasteners: There are heavy-duty double-sided tapes that secure furniture on smooth surfaces without sticking permanently or leaving residue if you use quality products.

I advise caution if you consider using screws directly into the parquet, as you can damage the surface. If you decide to go with wall fixings, be sure to choose appropriate anchors and screws for your wall type.

I hope these tips help you so far. If you like, I can provide more detailed product recommendations.

I agree that this is the most important aspect.

I would like to add: If you really want to secure the furniture to the floor, you should definitely consider the following:

- Use rubber mats or non-slip felt pads under the furniture legs to protect the hardwood floor.
- Directly screwing into the floor can damage the hardwood and should only be considered if you clearly know what you are doing and whether later repairs are possible.
- The safe alternative is actually attaching the furniture to the wall – Ikea often provides suitable metal brackets with Malm furniture for securing against tipping over.

Another idea: There are special fixing strips that you place under the furniture and equip with non-slip material. This keeps the furniture stable while leaving the floor undamaged.

I agree completely, this is the best combination of stability and protection.

Hello linopau0,

I think this topic is very important, especially with children in the house. I felt the same way when I secured my furniture.

In my experience, a combination of wall mounting and floor protection works best.

It is important to clean the areas on the parquet floor thoroughly before attaching anti-slip pads. Avoid using strong adhesives, as this can cause problems when removing them later.

Perhaps attaching "furniture stoppers" to the back of the furniture, which prevent slipping without fixing anything to the floor, might also help.

I have those too, and they really made a difference. However, with small children, I could imagine that might not be enough if the furniture gets tipped over.

How about wall mounting on your side? Do you have the option to use plugs and screws?

I also recommend discussing this with a professional if you’re unsure, as that can save you a lot of trouble.

My recommendation:

- Use wall brackets for attachment (Ikea offers these as well)
- Place non-slip protective mats under the furniture legs
- Do not use screws in the parquet floor, as this causes damage

This is usually enough to prevent tipping and slipping.
