Hello everyone,

I own several BILLY shelves from IKEA and want to significantly extend their lifespan. My question is: What methods or maintenance tips would you recommend to keep BILLY shelves stable and visually appealing for many years? I am especially interested in load-related factors, environmental influences, measures to prevent warping, and whether it makes sense to treat the material in any other way.

Are there any experiences regarding the best way to secure the shelf joints and whether it is advisable to reinforce screws or connection points afterward?

Thank you in advance for your insights and tips!

The mentioned shelf supports or middle brackets are usually small holders, mostly made of metal or plastic, that fit into pre-drilled holes on the side panel.

BILLY shelves have rows of holes on the inside to allow flexible adjustment of the shelf heights. Middle brackets are generally not offered by IKEA, but you can find universal middle supports at hardware stores, which you either fix with screws or use as clamp-type supports.

When installing afterward, a small drill is often necessary, especially if using sturdy metal brackets. However, C-shaped plastic or metal parts can also be used, which are positioned in the shelf without screws, reducing effort and avoiding damage to the material.

For aesthetics: some users paint the brackets or reinforcing strips to match the shelf, making them less noticeable. Alternatively, matching edge profiles or covers can help.

In general, stabilizing shelves with middle supports is always a good solution for sagging shelves.

Thanks for the tip! That sounds very practical and simple. Do you know if these solutions hold up well over time, or do they tend to shift or fall out?

Of course, I would like to avoid having to constantly readjust the shelf as much as possible.

I would also like to know if additional treatment of the visible edges (e.g., clear varnish or edge protection tape) increases durability—or if that doesn’t make much difference with melamine-coated boards.
