Good morning everyone!

I installed doors with magnetic catches on my Ikea Besta sideboard, but they don’t close very securely. Especially with small children or pets at home, it’s important to me that the doors don’t open unintentionally. My main question is: How can I effectively secure Ikea Besta doors with magnetic catches so they stay reliably closed without compromising functionality or design?

I would appreciate practical tips that don’t require major modifications, possibly solutions to strengthen or combine the magnetic force.

Hello,

a simple solution is to use stronger neodymium magnets instead of the original ones. The clamping force is significantly higher, and the doors stay closed more securely.

Alternatively, small door bolts or basic child safety locks installed on the inside can also help.

For effectively securing Ikea Besta doors with magnetic catches, I recommend the following approach:

- First, check whether the existing magnets are properly aligned. Any misalignment significantly reduces magnetic strength.
- Replacement neodymium magnets are a proven solution because they are strong and compact. Make sure to choose the correct size to maintain the appearance.
- Optionally, a self-adhesive additional metal strip can be applied to the inner side of the door to increase the contact surface and improve holding power.
- For extra safety, especially around children, internal child safety locks that can be inserted or locked without affecting the external design are recommended.

These measures should be combined to ensure both stability and functionality.

That's true! And you can easily set it up so that no one outside can see that there’s some kind of security mesh installed – almost like a secret agent for your doors. 😄

Regarding the magnets: Neodymium magnets are really great. If the original ones are so weak that the doors open with the slightest movement, you can definitely get a set of neodymium magnets. They are not only stronger but also last longer. Just be careful not to get ones that are too big, or closing the door without effort will become difficult.

So, a combination of a stronger magnet and a small interior-mounted bolt or lock – perfect! 🚪🔒

I simply used stronger magnets and added small self-adhesive rubber bumpers as stops. This improves the hold and eliminates rattling. It’s a quick solution and hardly noticeable visually.
