Hello everyone,

I have been experiencing a recurring issue with my Ikea Metod kitchen, where several screws, especially those on cabinet fronts and base cabinets, keep coming loose. This causes doors not to close properly or whole sections to feel noticeably wobbly. I want to fix this permanently and as effectively as possible to prevent the screws from loosening again.

Are there any proven methods or tips for properly securing loose screws in Ikea Metod kitchen furniture without them stripping or loosening again? Which tools and materials are best suited for this?

I would appreciate any advice on how to approach this, including recommendations on screw types or aids (e.g., special anchors, thread lockers) that might help. Thanks!

Hey, that sounds frustrating when the cabinets feel like a wobbly playpen! For Ikea Metod, it’s common that the standard cam screws and dowels lose their grip over time, especially with frequent use.

My advice: Loosen the screws and check the holes. If the wood material in the hole is worn out, you can apply wood glue inside, insert some cotton or small wood pieces as filler, and then retighten the screw. For extra hold, you can also use medium-strength threadlocker – it reduces “vibration loosening” without making the screws impossible to remove.

Little extras make all the difference! 😉

Exactly! I’ve had good results using wooden dowels that you can insert into the old holes if they’ve become too large. Then just screw in the screws again – and voilà, everything fits firmly once more!

You can do it! There’s nothing you can’t fix with a bit of patience and the right tricks! 😃👍

Here is a structured approach to effectively fix loose screws in Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets:

- Carefully remove the screw to avoid further damage to the material.
- Inspect the hole: is it worn out or too large?
- If yes: Does a wooden or plastic dowel fit into the hole? If no suitable dowel is available, a combination of wood glue and filler material (wood shavings or small pieces) can be used.
- Apply wood glue into the hole, insert the filler material, and let it cure for at least 1 hour. Then carefully reinsert the screw.
- Alternatively, use insert nuts or larger screws, but do so cautiously to avoid damaging the furniture.
- A medium-strength threadlocker can also be applied to help prevent loosening.

Caution: Avoid using screws that are too large or applying excessive force, as the thin wood at Metod connection points is sensitive.

This method is recommended by professionals and is based on standard wood repair procedures.

Hello Sonny52,

I’m happy to provide you with a detailed step-by-step guide that I often use for Metod kitchen cabinets when screws have loosened and the hole is slightly damaged:

1. Completely unscrew the screws and thoroughly clean the area around the hole.
2. Check if the hole is still intact. If it’s too large or frayed, use wood glue.
3. Prepare a small wood chip clump or wood blocks to fit the hole and soak them with wood glue (not super glue, as it becomes too hard and brittle).
4. Fill the hole with this material, pressing the filler in gently but avoid overfilling.
5. Wait until the glue is fully dried (at least 2 hours, longer in a cool room).
6. Use a screw of the same or slightly larger diameter, preferably one with fine threads if possible.
7. Slowly and carefully insert the screw into the dried hole and tighten it.

Additionally, to prevent loosening, you can apply medium-strength thread locker to the screw. Metal screws with plastic anchors, like those used by Ikea, are often near their load capacity – careful handling helps improve durability.

If screws need to be retightened frequently, using a small wooden strip screwed onto the inside surface can also provide additional stability.

I hope this helps you!

Wood glue into the hole, fill material added, let dry, then screw goes back in. Add threadlocker as well. Done.
