ᐅ How can I effectively repair damaged edges on Ikea Metod countertops?

jannoHello everyone,
I have a somewhat specific question regarding the repair of damaged countertop edges in Ikea Metod kitchens. Specifically, it concerns damaged ABS edging strips (the edge banding on the countertop edges) that I have due to improper handling or minor accidents in the kitchen. Some areas are chipped or broken, which not only looks unattractive but also compromises moisture resistance.
Does anyone have practical and, above all, durable solutions for repairing or replacing these ABS edges? I would like to know if there are special repair kits, adhesives, or alternative materials that hold up well—preferably without having to replace the entire countertop. I’m also interested in whether the effort is worthwhile or if it’s better to simply buy new countertop edges (for example, from a specialty store) and replace them myself.
Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

Hey janno,
great question! Metod countertops aren’t exactly superheroes when it comes to scratches and dents. 😅
Here’s something I tried that worked surprisingly well: First, carefully cut out the damaged edge with a small knife or a leftover cutter blade (without damaging the countertop itself). Then, I used a special ABS repair adhesive from the hardware store, which is actually meant for furniture trim. The adhesive fills the gaps nicely, and after a few hours of drying, you can smooth it out with fine sandpaper. This way, you get an almost invisible repair.
If the edge is too damaged, you can also buy new ABS strips (designed for kitchen countertops) and glue them onto the countertop. But be careful: the key is to work carefully, keeping the edge smooth and even so moisture stays out.
It may sound like a lot of effort, but it’s worth it to avoid replacing the entire countertop! Good luck!

Hello janno,
I would like to bring some structure to the repair of damaged Ikea Metod countertop edges—specifically the ABS edge issue.
1. First, assess the damage: Is the ABS edge only superficially damaged (scratches, small chips) or is there a larger area missing?
2. Small blemishes can often be repaired with repair wax or a wood/plastic filler. The material in a matching color is gently heated and applied, then sanded smooth.
3. For larger chips, the following options are recommended:
- Replacement of the affected ABS strip (usually for relatively new countertops): Carefully remove the ABS strip, clean the edges, and attach a new strip with contact adhesive.
- Professional epoxy-based repair adhesive: It is easy to shape, dries hard, and is water-resistant.
4. In general, always ensure that repaired areas are subsequently sealed or painted to prevent moisture from penetrating the countertop.
5. Repair is worthwhile when the damage is localized and the countertop is otherwise in good condition. Otherwise, consider a full replacement.
A common cause of repair failure is insufficient preparation of the edges—oil, dirt, or sanding residues greatly reduce adhesion.
I hope this structure helps you!

Always make sure that repaired areas are properly sealed or painted afterwards to prevent moisture from penetrating the board. This is exactly the crucial point when repairing ABS edges on Metod countertops. The edges are factory-finished to be almost completely waterproof. For a repair to be successful, this characteristic must be preserved as fully as possible.
Procedure:
- Remove the damaged edge without damaging the underlying particleboard
- Clean and degrease the surface
- Use a waterproof repair adhesive, e.g., a two-component epoxy resin
- Finish by sanding and applying a thin layer of clear varnish
All materials should be specifically suitable for furniture use and tested for water resistance.
If the edge is extensively damaged, a professional replacement of the ABS strip is recommended, as repairs often cannot guarantee long-lasting water tightness in these cases.
