Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of how to effectively optimize the storage space in my IKEA Metod tall cabinets. The cabinets are 60 cm (24 inches) wide and about 2.4 m (7 feet 10 inches) high, and I feel like I’m not really making good use of the available volume. My main concern is to store both large kitchen utensils and smaller pantry containers in a practical and easily accessible way. Maybe someone has some practical tips or clever organization solutions that improve storage efficiency without constant rearranging. I am open to all ideas, especially regarding compartmentalization, use of accessories, or possibly alternative installation aids.

Another important point is extendable interior drawers or inserts. That sounds really practical. So far, I have only used fixed shelves and thought that interior drawers tend to be quite expensive. How does it improve accessibility? Would it be possible to retrofit something like this into existing Metod tall cabinets, or do you need special modules for that? Does anyone have recommendations for compatible drawer systems that match Ikea quality?

Why not daringly have some custom-made interior fittings made? That sounds tempting, but I’m more of a DIY beginner. Are there also prefabricated, non-Ikea products that can be easily integrated? Or maybe adjustable modules that can be flexibly adapted without much craftsmanship?
Regarding questions about internal drawers: Yes, most systems from Ikea and third-party suppliers can be easily installed afterward in the Metod tall cabinet. It is important that you know the exact interior dimensions, especially the depth and height between the shelves.
Here is a brief guide:
- Measure the width, depth, and height of the cabinet interior
- Decide how many drawers you want (usually 2–4 depending on the height)
- Purchase internal drawers with the appropriate width (usually 56cm (22 inches) for Metod) and sufficient load capacity
- Remove the shelves and screw in the drawer runners according to the instructions
- Make sure the drawers do not collide with the door
Regarding boxes: Stackable boxes made of acrylic or plastic with handles make storage very flexible. Many of my clients also appreciate transparent materials to immediately see the contents. This saves a lot of time.
And dear Davincent, try it step by step. Often there are affordable sets available at furniture or hardware stores that can be installed without much prior knowledge.
