Hello everyone,
I recently installed Ikea Metod cabinets with matte fronts in my kitchen. Unfortunately, after a few weeks of use, I’ve noticed that the matte surface smudges easily, and dust and fingerprints are quite noticeable.
My question is: What is the most effective yet gentle way to clean matte Ikea Metod fronts?
I want to avoid damaging the surface or losing the matte appearance. Are there specific cleaning products or techniques that work particularly well?
What has been your experience with degreasing agents or maybe special cloths?
Looking forward to helpful tips and advice!

Hello nilu53,
I have had good results cleaning matte Ikea Metod fronts using a mild, pH-neutral all-purpose cleaner, which you should apply diluted. It is important not to use abrasive cleaners or solvent-based products, as these can damage the matte finish or make it glossy.
For cleaning, I use a soft microfiber cloth that doesn’t shed and gently cleans the surface. For stubborn grease stains, slightly warm water with a little dish soap helps – again, apply only with a damp cloth, not too wet, to avoid water damage.
Important: Always wipe again with clean water and then dry thoroughly to prevent water spots.
If you clean frequently, it might be worth using a gentle plastic care product designed for matte surfaces, which helps preserve the matte effect.
Best regards

It’s best to use a microfiber cloth, which you should change regularly to prevent coarse particles from causing scratches. If you feel that the matte surface has lost its quality after cleaning, a special cleaning and care product for matte lacquer or plastic fronts often helps; apply it gently with a cloth.
Sometimes I also recommend testing the cleaner first on an inconspicuous spot before using it on a larger area.
To avoid residues or a greasy film, do not use too much dish soap.
Have you tried different cleaning products on your fronts so far? Then I might be able to give you more specific advice.

My question is: What is the most effective and gentle way to clean matte Ikea Metod cabinet fronts?I know exactly what you mean — matte surfaces can be really tricky to clean. I had the same concerns because I was afraid the fronts would develop an unpleasant shine or even get scratched after cleaning.
What helped me was regular care using warm water and a very mild dish soap, just as you described. But even more important, in my opinion, is the technique: I press the cloth lightly and wipe in one direction rather than scrubbing back and forth. This prevents pushing the dirt deeper into the surface.
If you encounter stubborn grease buildup, you can occasionally try a vinegar-water mixture, but not too often, as too much acid can damage the surface. Personally, I use it only every few weeks.
I hope you find a method that works well for you — it’s worth being patient! Your fronts will surely look great, and proper cleaning will significantly extend their lifespan.
