Hello everyone,
I have several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces (cabinets, dressers) in my apartment and live with two pets (a cat and a small dog). I’ve noticed that despite regular cleaning, hair and dander accumulate more and more, along with small dirt marks like paw prints and slight discoloration on the white surfaces.
It’s important for me to clean the furniture effectively without damaging or dulling the often lacquered finish. I’m looking for gentle methods that are suitable for the sensitive materials but still ensure thorough removal of pet residues.
So, how can I effectively clean IKEA Hemnes furniture when you have pets? I’m especially interested in what cleaning products and tools have proven effective and how often the furniture should be cleaned to avoid damage. Are there any specific home remedies that work well to remove pet hair?
I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences!

A quick additional question: Is it enough to clean with a damp cloth every 7-10 days if you dust daily and pets leave some dirty paw marks on the furniture? Or is more frequent cleaning better? That depends largely on how visible or bothersome the dirt is to you.
In general, when you have pets, I recommend a combination of:
- Daily dusting (e.g., microfiber cloth or lint roller)
- Targeted quick cleaning when there are stains (such as paw prints or oil residues) to prevent absorption or discoloration
Damp cleaning every 7-10 days is practical and usually sufficient if nothing unusual happens.
If dirty spots appear more often, you can simply spot-clean with a damp cloth without wetting the entire surface.
Regarding polish or care products:
- Painted Hemnes furniture does not respond well to waxes or oils, as these can cause stains or dull the surface.
- Special furniture polishes for plastic or lacquered surfaces are suitable to maintain shine but should be used sparingly.
Feel free to ask for more details if you have specific types of stains (e.g., grease, urine, scratches).
Hello everyone!
I also have my HEMNES corner in a house with two cats. What works great for me is first dusting with a dry vacuum cleaner using the upholstery brush, then wiping with a slightly damp microfiber cloth – that’s it. This removes the hair, and the surfaces stay intact.
If the adorable pets leave paw prints, I use a glass cleaner spray (applied sparingly) and a cloth – it’s quick, the smell disappears fast, and it’s fairly gentle.
Important: avoid anything with alcohol or harsh chemicals.
Tip: Dog and cat hair can also be easily removed using rubber gloves. Just dampen them and rub over the furniture surface. I always enjoyed this because it worked so well 😄
