Hello everyone,

I have some IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet fronts that have unfortunately developed minor damage from everyday use—such as scratches, small dents, or chipped coating. I would like to repair the doors myself, ideally using simple methods without professional tools or expensive products. Does anyone know effective techniques or tried-and-true tips for restoring Metod doors both visually and functionally? I’m especially interested in advice on suitable materials for fillers, paint, or surface treatments that match the original fronts. Looking forward to your experiences and recommendations!

That sounds like a great project! 🍀 For Metod doors, I can recommend the following: If you only have minor scratches or dents, simply use wood filler that sands well. Some people also use color-matched furniture touch-up markers, which you can find at hardware stores. After filling and sanding, applying a thin coat of acrylic paint—in the color of the surface, if you can find it—or a high-quality clear lacquer, if you want a transparent finish, helps a lot.

Important: Always sand between coats to keep the surface smooth and ensure the paint adheres properly. This prevents visible seams. And hey, a bit of patience pays off. 😉

If the coating has chipped off: You can renew small areas with laminate repair kits, which are affordable and generally a good match. Just give it a try and don’t get discouraged—the simple design of these fronts is quite forgiving.

Hello tarwadim,

For repairing IKEA Metod doors, I recommend a structured approach:

1. Assess the damage carefully: Is it only superficial (scratches, small chips), or does it affect the core board?
2. For small scratches, use furniture touch-up markers available in various shades. These are ideal for spot repairs.
3. For dents or chipped areas, fill the indentations with a fine-pored wood filler. Make sure the product is suitable for synthetic resin-coated surfaces.
4. After it has fully dried, sand it finely (grit 220 or higher) to achieve a smooth surface.
5. For the finish: Since Metod doors are usually foil-coated or have a matte lacquer, use a matching acrylic paint in spray form or for rolling. Clean and lightly sand the surface beforehand (fine sanding).
6. Apply a thin, even build-up of paint for a good result and to prevent chipping.

A common mistake is applying too thick a layer or not allowing sufficient drying time – this leads to poor results and reduced durability.

Good luck!

I’d like to add to that: especially with IKEA Metod doors, which often have a thin melamine or foil coating, you should be careful when sanding to avoid causing more damage.

When I’ve chipped small corners myself, I like to use a thin acrylic filler that dries quickly and adapts well. You can carefully touch up the repaired area afterwards with a small brush. Good lighting is important to match the color properly.

If possible, also check the temperature and humidity, as excess moisture during drying can worsen the results.

It requires patience, but with calmness and the right materials, it really works well!

Adding to the previous comments, here is a precise tip:

- For minor damage, use a solvent-free acrylic or wood filler that is flexible enough to absorb stress caused by temperature changes.
- Sand with fine-grit sandpaper, no coarser than 240 grit, to avoid damaging the surface texture.
- Acrylic paint should match the door color exactly. It is recommended to test it on an inconspicuous area first.
- Using laminate filler is only advisable for thin, superficial veneers; otherwise, there is a risk of peeling.

These steps can be done with readily available products without the need for expensive specialized tools.

In summary: Thorough preparation, appropriate materials, and careful work form the basis of a durable repair.
