Hello everyone, I’m faced with the task of completely dismantling a Malm piece of furniture and would appreciate some clear tips on the best way to do this.
I am especially concerned about avoiding any unsightly holes, scratches, or other marks after removal, particularly with regard to the possibility of renting out the apartment.
Which tools and methods are recommended to disassemble the furniture as carefully and professionally as possible?
Are there specific areas I should pay extra attention to in order to ensure no damage remains?
I would be grateful for any helpful guidance!

1. Completely remove the drawers and store them separately. That’s exactly how I do it as well.
One more tip: avoid using screwdrivers that don’t fit the system.
This often just rounds off the edges, which is difficult to fix later.

Is there a recommended order for disassembly – for example, should the drawers be removed first or the back panel? My approach: start by removing the drawers, as this gives you more room to work. Then take off the back panel. After that, loosen all screws so the furniture can be taken apart into individual pieces.
I would add: use a soft surface to protect the wood when putting down the parts — an old towel or flannel cloth works perfectly.
You’ll see, with patience and the right tools, the process goes pretty smoothly. And very important: don’t rush if something feels stuck 🙂
It is important not to apply too much force when tightening to avoid damaging the threads in the wood.
If holes remain visible, there are suitable wooden dowels that can be inserted, glued in place, and then sanded down.
This results in a neat surface without unsightly marks.
