Good morning everyone,

I have an IKEA Malm chest of drawers that I want to disassemble completely without leaving any residue. Specifically, I want to avoid damaging any parts during disassembly and, most importantly, not leave any screws or dowels behind that could cause issues during later use. Since the chest of drawers is used, I want to be especially careful, as I plan to reassemble it soon—ideally without any material loss or visible marks.

My question is: How can I disassemble a Malm chest of drawers without leaving any traces? Which tools do you recommend, and what areas should I pay special attention to in order to avoid damaging the wood or breaking dowels or having screws stuck too tightly? Are there any other tips or experiences you could share, especially regarding the removal of the drawers and the drawer slides?

Thanks for your help!

Hello Jenige,

I can understand your situation very well, as I have disassembled several Malm dressers myself – here is my detailed step-by-step suggestion for dismantling without leaving any residue:

1. Tools: Use a Phillips screwdriver of the appropriate size or a cordless drill with torque control. A rubber mallet can help if you need to carefully loosen dowels.

2. Follow the order: Always remove the drawers completely first. This usually can be done without tools by fully extending the full-extension drawer slides and releasing the catches.

3. Unscrewing: Be careful not to over-tighten the screws to avoid splitting the wood. Unscrew them completely and keep them in a small container.

4. Dowels: These wooden or plastic dowels can be tricky because they sit deep. To remove them without residue, loosen the glued joints just enough to separate the parts without trying to pull the dowels out completely. If dowels break, small residues usually remain and are difficult to remove.

5. Protect wood surfaces: Use a thin plastic shim or a putty knife to avoid pressure marks when levering.

6. Additional notes: Malm dressers are modular, often with recessed screw holes. Avoid using force, as this can cause unsightly damage.

Your usage scenario: Are you planning to reassemble the dresser soon? If the dresser will be stored in the meantime, a lacquered or oiled surface helps protect the screw hole fittings.

If anything is unclear or you have specific areas of concern, feel free to ask for more details.

Best regards!

This is an important point. Additionally: Use a cordless drill only on a low torque setting. If screws turn with no resistance, it often means the threads or the wood are already damaged – so proceed carefully to avoid enlarging the holes.

Exactly, with dowels it’s usually enough to slightly soften the glue. If needed, use a small spatula or a thin knife to gently loosen the glue – be careful not to damage the wood.

Also: Make sure to fully unscrew the screws before pulling the parts apart. This prevents unnecessary breakage of the joints.

Tool check: A set of well-fitting screwdriver bits is invaluable – poorly fitting bits can damage the screws.

Hi Jenige,

I’d like to revisit the basic approach that will help you safely dismantle everything without leaving any damage:

1. Remove drawers – pull them out completely and check for hidden screws, as the rails are often secured with small clips or retaining brackets.

2. Test all screws by hand to see if they are already loose – if so, you can carefully remove them by hand to reduce the use of a cordless screwdriver. This lowers the risk of stripping or damaging the material.

3. When removing dowels: you can often see a small gap where the wood meets the dowel. Carefully widen this gap with a small screwdriver or a thin putty knife. Don’t hesitate to invest some time in this step.

4. If you notice resistance when pulling off panels, always first check for any hidden screws before pulling harder. You can also gently lever with angles or pry tools if needed.

Even though this process might take some time, causing less damage usually means lower costs in the end.

If you plan to rebuild at night or the next day, store the parts safely and dust-protected to avoid any damage.

Good luck!

The simplest method is to fully unscrew the screws and completely pull out the drawers, then gently pry at the joints if the wall plugs don’t come out.

Yes, definitely! Screws on the back or at cabinet joints are often overlooked.

Recommended tools: a Phillips screwdriver, not power tools, if you’re unsure.

Patience is key.
