Hello everyone, a few months ago I purchased Malm furniture from IKEA and now I want to clean it properly without damaging the surfaces or causing premature wear. I am especially interested in which cleaning products are currently best suited, how often cleaning should be done, and if there are any specific care tips to keep in mind for the melamine surfaces. Who has experience with cleaning MALM and can provide a thorough and detailed guide?

It’s interesting that no one has addressed the long-term effects of cleaning agents on melamine surfaces here.

From my experience, even mild dish soap can gradually dissolve the finish if used too frequently—especially on cheaper melamine options like those found in Malm.

Have you ever considered that frequent damp wiping might damage the sealant and cause it to become dull over time?

Could it therefore be argued that dry cleaning or spot damp cleaning is better for preserving the surface in the long run?

I would like to know if there is any scientific information or official guidance from IKEA on this topic.

You’ve raised an important point. While melamine coatings are durable, the surface is not indestructible. That’s why I recommend using water sparingly and wringing out the cloth well.

Would you really recommend regularly wiping furniture with a slightly damp cloth even if it’s just dust, for normal use?

For light dirt, dry dusting is completely sufficient. Damp wiping should only be done when truly necessary. This helps avoid unnecessary wear on the surface.

In short: properly measured cleaning with mild agents and promptly drying is the best approach.

I clean my MALM furniture with a damp sponge and mild dish soap, then wipe it dry. Never use harsh cleaners or abrasive materials. This method has worked perfectly for years.
