Hello everyone, I am planning to design my small apartment using Ikea Besta furniture in a way that is both functional and creative, as I have limited space and each piece of furniture should be as multifunctional as possible. I am interested in your ideas on how to make the most of the modular Besta system for small rooms, especially regarding combinations, customizations, and possibly creative surface treatments to maximize storage while keeping an attractive appearance. What solutions do you have for seating, desk functions, or hidden storage that can be achieved with Besta? I look forward to your suggestions and details, including tips on planning and implementation!

Do you have specific room dimensions or intended uses to provide more targeted advice?Good question. I actually have about 28 square meters (300 square feet) available, combining living and sleeping areas, with two windows each approximately 1.20 m (4 feet) wide. My idea is to use one area as a workspace that should be as small as possible but still functional. I also need storage for clothes, books, and various household items. The seating, if possible integrated into or on top of the Besta modules, is intended for occasional visitors. So far, I have considered using the Besta with a maximum width of 120 cm (4 feet), combined with lower modules or shelves. In your opinion, what would be a pragmatic yet creative and aesthetically pleasing layout that does not overcrowd the space?

My idea is to use part of the space as a workspace, which should be as small as possible but still functional. With the available 28 sqm (300 sq ft) and two windows, I would recommend placing the Besta modules close to a wall or fitting them narrow underneath the windows, possibly 120 cm (4 feet) wide and 40 cm (16 inches) deep, as this provides a good work surface without appearing bulky.
A low cabinet made from 120 cm (4 feet) wide modules with a seat cushion on top can serve two purposes: storage and seating. It’s worth combining two lower or one standard Besta module with drawers to keep things organized.
For books, you can choose shelving units or open Besta modules combined with cabinet doors if you prefer not to display everything openly. If you need storage for clothing, consider integrating a narrow wardrobe next to the seating/work area and possibly installing wall-mounted shelves above.
Another idea: install a pull-out tabletop (using hinges or an extension mechanism) on a Besta module. This keeps the footprint small but provides space for a laptop when needed. It also works great if you don’t need to use the workspace all the time.
How important is a clear visual separation between the workspace and the living/sleeping area? This will greatly influence the furniture arrangement and color scheme.
