Hello everyone, some time ago I bought Malm furniture from Ikea and have now unfortunately discovered some defects. To make a warranty claim, I want to report the damage correctly and clearly. My question is: What is the best and proper way to present defective Malm furniture for a warranty claim? What specific steps should I take, which information is important, and how can I document the defects properly so that Ikea can respond without any issues? I know photos are important, but are there any special things to consider here? Thanks in advance for your helpful tips and experiences!

Show that you have studied the product carefully and that no major errors were made in its use.

Thanks, that makes sense. In my statement, I will also briefly mention that I have studied the instructions and adhered to the specified load limits.

Formulate your message objectively, referring to the statutory warranty (usually 2 years in Germany) as well as the Ikea guarantee terms.

Can someone tell me if the Ikea guarantee for Malm furniture really lasts 10 years or if it’s more like two years? I’m unsure what exactly applies and whether I should officially refer to one or the other.

Basically, Ikea offers a 10-year warranty on Malm furniture, which means they cover material and manufacturing defects during this period. However, the statutory warranty in Germany is 2 years and is independent of the manufacturer's warranty.

When making a claim, it is therefore useful to mention both aspects. The 10-year warranty naturally sounds more attractive and demonstrates Ikea’s goodwill beyond the legal requirements.

I would add that, due to the long warranty period of 10 years, Ikea often requires the customer to explain this significant timespan, meaning that the usage must be understandable—especially regarding the manner and extent of use.

Similar to technical devices, a warranty is not automatic but requires proof that the product is truly defective and not worn out from normal use.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to offer some support! 🙂

If you don’t have the time to do everything in detail, here’s a tip: just send the most important photos, your purchase receipt, and a brief description of your issue to Ikea. They are usually very accommodating and often help quite quickly. I once had a drawer that didn’t close properly – I simply reported it, and they sent me a replacement box! Just keep at it, it works! 🙂
