Good morning everyone, I plan to assemble an IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet and want to make sure I install the connecting fittings correctly. My question is: Are there any specific techniques or steps I should follow when joining the Metod connectors to ensure stability and a precise fit? For example, I sometimes have trouble aligning the fittings exactly and then firmly connecting the parts without resistance – this often leads to wobbling or uneven edges. What assembly tips or tricks can you recommend to make the entire structure stable and prevent the fittings from loosening? I am especially interested in how to properly use the included screws and the best approach for attaching the panels. Thanks in advance for your advice!
The most important thing when working with IKEA Metod connector fittings is to tighten the screws neither too tightly nor too loosely. First, insert the dowels properly and align the panels. Then carefully screw in the connectors using a cordless drill. If it feels stuck, it’s better to loosen slightly and realign.

Basically, I always start by carefully checking the drill holes for the dowels and connecting fittings, as this prevents misalignment during assembly later on. It is important that you initially connect the panels only loosely to properly align all parts. Then you can gradually tighten the screws without applying full force right away. This avoids stress and prevents damage to the material. When you look at the fittings, you will see that they usually have a guide or a click mechanism – this greatly simplifies alignment. If the panels are difficult to fit together, be sure to check if all dowels are seated correctly and are not damaged. Sometimes it also helps to lightly grease the fittings before installation if the parts are made of metal, to allow easier sliding. If you mean special connecting fittings with eccentric or tension mechanisms, make sure to tighten the tension screw only with the recommended torque, which is often specified in the included instructions.

It is important to initially connect the panels only loosely to properly align all parts. That is indeed the crucial point. However, I would add that many users underestimate how important the preparatory work is: if the panels are slightly drilled at an angle or the dowels are only partially inserted, even the best assembly won’t compensate for that. My recommendation is to check all individual components for dimensional accuracy before assembly – this also includes carefully inspecting the connection points and dowel holes. Only this way can a stable, wobble-free joint be achieved.
Furthermore, I have noticed that using a cordless drill without torque control on Metod fittings often leads to screws being overtightened, which damages the material and affects the fit. I wonder if Ikea could improve this – perhaps through better instructions or more secure drill templates? That would save a lot of frustration.
