Hello everyone, I am about to install the doors on my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet and have a few questions about the best way to proceed. Specifically, I want to know how to adjust the doors properly so they close smoothly without rubbing, and what sequence is best for attaching the hinges and doors. It would also be helpful to get any special tips for aligning the doors, especially when connecting different units. The instructions describe the steps, but some details remain unclear, for example how much adjustment range the hinges actually have, and whether I should check the cabinet carcass on a level surface before installation. I look forward to your experiences and advice to avoid hassle during the installation. Thanks in advance!
The installation of IKEA Metod cabinet doors generally follows these steps:
- First, check that the cabinet frame is completely level and stable; if on uneven floors, adjust using leveling feet.
- Attach the Metod hinges to the door panel according to the instructions; they have three adjustment screws for height, depth, and lateral alignment.
- Hang the door on the cabinet frame and carry out the adjustments in this order: first height, then lateral alignment, and finally the closing pressure.
- Use a spirit level to verify that the doors are horizontally aligned and close flush.
Additional fine-tuning is often necessary because small tolerances in the cabinet frame and floors can cause issues. Important: Do not fully tighten the hinges until the fine adjustments are completed. This helps prevent misalignment and damage.

Hello Klaje38, I can easily understand that precisely adjusting the Metod doors at the beginning can seem a bit tricky. The instructions are detailed, but in practice, things often look different.
It is really important, as Dwight49 already mentioned, that your cabinet carcass is absolutely stable and level. If you place several units side by side, you should securely connect them using the supplied fittings and align the units properly. If the cabinets are not flush, door adjustment will not provide a lasting solution.
Regarding the hinges: they allow a lot of fine adjustment. I recommend loosely hanging the doors after mounting the hinges, starting with a rough position. Then adjust the height using the middle screw. This moves the door up or down. Next, use the side screw to adjust the gap between the door and the carcass, controlling how tightly the door fits or if there is a gap. Finally, you can adjust the closing pressure with the third screw so the door closes perfectly flush.
Also, when adjusting, pay attention to consistent gap widths – a thin ruler or string helps to check this accurately.
If doors hit each other, a small gap of about 2mm (0.08 inches) can help prevent sticking. Overall, it takes some patience; I found iterative fitting to be the most effective approach.

Only then can you later set the doors to be perfectly aligned.

Also pay attention to even gap measurements during adjustmentThis is very important because uneven gaps are immediately noticeable. For the adjustment, it’s best to use the adjustment screws included with the Metod hinges:
- Middle screw for height,
- Side screw for depth,
- Front pressure screw.
A tip: Take your time and initially set the doors roughly. Then gradually fine-tune all the gaps together with a spirit level. If a door sticks, it’s better to leave a small gap than to force it. The door should close smoothly but securely.
Good luck with the installation!
