Hello everyone,
I am planning to install a new kitchen using the Ikea Metod base cabinets and want to do the assembly correctly from the start to avoid any problems later on. Since I am not yet very familiar with the assembly instructions or handling the fasteners, I have some specific questions:

- What is the step-by-step process for assembling the cabinets properly? For example, how exactly should the connections be screwed together to ensure stability?
- Do I need to pre-drill any parts before assembly, or are there any special technical recommendations, for instance regarding attaching fittings and fronts?
- Is there a recommended order for assembling the different components (carcass, base, doors, drawers) that saves time and effort?
- Which tools are absolutely necessary, and what should I pay special attention to in order to avoid damage or misalignment?

I would really appreciate detailed advice or even a brief overview of the complete assembly process, as I want to get it right. Many thanks in advance!

Hello Fartheo,

Your questions about the correct assembly of the Ikea Metod base cabinets are very focused. I’m happy to explain the complete process with details that I personally pay attention to during assembly.

- First, it’s important to sort and check all parts carefully. Missing or damaged components should be reported before starting the assembly.
- Assembly begins with the carcass. Attach the side panels to the bottom panel, making sure to position the connector fittings (usually “cam locks” with Ikea) correctly. Use the included assembly drill bit from the set or a 5 mm (0.2 inch) drill bit if the set is not available.
- Pre-drilling is usually not necessary, as Ikea supplies pre-drilled holes; however, still check the fit of the parts. When tightening the cam locks, apply gentle pressure to avoid damaging the material.
- Make sure to align the carcass perfectly square before fully securing it, otherwise you might face issues when fitting the doors later.
- The back panel is usually fixed with small nails or screws—no pre-drilling is required here, but a firm fit is important to keep the cabinet stable.
- Afterward, install the drawers and doors. The hinges should be precisely adjusted for height and depth according to the instructions; a spirit level and steady hands are helpful here.
- Finally, mount the plinths and cover strips, if included.

Tools: Phillips screwdriver, cordless drill/driver with depth stop, spirit level, possibly a hammer and pliers. Don’t underestimate the time needed for precise adjustments—that really makes a difference later.

Are there any specific challenges you’re facing during assembly that you would like to discuss?

This is an important point. Additionally, I recommend initially tightening the screws only lightly so you still have some play for alignment. Only when everything is level and the angle is correct should you fully tighten the screws. This prevents warping and later issues when installing the doors.

Also, the back panel should definitely be positioned centrally and firmly secured – it significantly contributes to stability.

Regarding tools: A cordless drill with adjustable torque is very helpful to avoid over-tightening the screws.

I would like to point out that although the usual assembly process for Ikea Metod base cabinets is generally well documented, details are often overlooked that are especially important for uneven floors or varying wall lengths.

The sequence itself is standardized; you should assemble the carcass first. However, I recommend installing the drawer slides and hinges only after the carcass is fully fitted. This allows for easier adjustments later on. If you install the doors before the carcass is properly aligned or secured, it can lead to a lot of rework.

I would also suggest adjusting the height of the toe kicks to the surroundings, as they not only improve the appearance but also help compensate for minor floor unevenness.

In short: the correct approach on site is just as important as the proper installation of the components—this is often underestimated in the instructions.

Exactly, that’s a point I would like to add. With IKEA Metod, you can combine the baseboards with height-adjustable feet if available. This ensures perfect alignment of the base cabinet.

I completely agree. I set my cordless drill to a low torque and then tighten further by hand once everything is in place. This is especially important with chipboard, like in Metod, to avoid damaging the material.

One more tip: Before mounting the cabinet fronts, it’s advisable to first assemble and adjust the doors with hinges on a cabinet to ensure everything fits properly and closes well.
