Hello everyone,
I want to repurpose my IKEA Besta shelving unit as storage furniture for crafting supplies and materials, but I’m unsure how to make it practical and functional. My craft items vary greatly: from small beads, threads, and pens to larger items like fabrics or wooden strips. The shelving unit should remain as organized as possible, offer easy access, and protect or neatly store the materials.
Has anyone had experience or tips on how to effectively modify the Besta unit, for example with internal dividers, drawer inserts, or special boxes? Which adaptations are particularly suitable to keep the variety of craft supplies well organized?
I’m also interested in practical advice on whether to modify the back panels or doors, or if there are specific IKEA accessories that are recommended for installation.
Thank you in advance for your ideas and suggestions!

Good morning,
here is an addition to the previous tips:
- When installing additional interior partitions, make sure not to exceed the maximum load capacity of the Besta elements.
- For stability with heavier materials, you can also attach metal brackets to the inner sides.
- If you have compartments with doors, it is advisable to install door dampers to enable soft closing—this helps prevent loud slamming, which is especially useful when storing many crafting supplies on the shelves.
- Additional LED strips inside the shelves can improve visibility.
These measures significantly enhance functionality.

I agree with Jaime and would like to add:
If you want to modify the Besta shelf for craft supplies, you should carefully measure the dimensions of the boxes beforehand and know the internal dimensions of the shelf to avoid wasted space.
I also recommend attaching furniture sliders or casters under the shelf. This way, you can move the piece more easily, for example to vacuum underneath or to reorganize the layout.
A small tip: For loose, small items, modular boxes with transparent compartments have proven to be very practical.

Hello everyone,
I would like to share a brief guide on how to optimally modify the IKEA Besta for craft supplies:
1. Planning: Make a list of your craft materials, sorting them by size and frequency of use.
2. Interior fittings: Use modular inserts, such as drawer organizers, sorting boxes, or removable compartments, preferably transparent.
3. Use the doors: Attach hook rails or magnetic holders to the inside of the doors, for example for scissors or pliers.
4. Lighting: LED strips inside can help keep everything visible.
5. Stability: Be mindful of the maximum weight limit and place heavy items at the bottom.
Common mistakes:
- Too many loose items without dividers
- Small items stored too high, making them hard to reach
The most important thing: Ensure flexibility and clarity by using various modules and transparent storage solutions.

Make sure to choose standard sizes so the boxes fit well in the Besta.

I also attached small clips and hooks to the inside of the doors; it saves a lot of space! That’s really a great idea! The inside of the doors is often underutilized. This can be easily optimized with simple clamp or screw-on solutions.
Overall, the goal is a flexible, organized system tailored to your individual crafting habits.
