Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to redesign my kitchen and would like to use the IKEA Besta system as a countertop with integrated storage. My idea is to assemble the Besta units so that they serve as a sturdy work surface while also providing enough storage space for larger kitchen utensils. Now I am wondering: How can I convert IKEA Besta into a countertop with built-in storage in the kitchen, ensuring the structure is stable enough for practical use, the surface is well-utilized, and an attractive appearance is maintained?

Are there any experiences or tips on what to pay special attention to during assembly (e.g., securing the countertop, connecting narrower units to the work surface, possible reinforcements)? Which types of countertops are suitable, and how can they best be attached to the Besta modules?

I would appreciate any concrete advice on material selection, tools, and potentially useful modifications. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey kafochen,

great that you want to customize your kitchen so individually! I’ve worked with Besta myself and find the system really versatile. To your question: How do I convert IKEA Besta into a countertop with integrated storage in the kitchen? – In my experience, stability mainly comes from solid connections and a good countertop.

I would recommend firmly connecting the Besta units using the included corner brackets as much as possible. You can either secure the countertop with strong construction adhesive or screw it to the cabinet frame from underneath using small clamps for extra support.

Regarding the countertop: Solid wood boards are great because they feel sturdy and are easy to work with. Just make sure to round off all the edges nicely so nothing splinters while you’re working on it.

A small tip for storage: You can add drawer inserts inside the compartments. This keeps everything neat and well organized.

Good luck, and reach out if you want to know more! 😉

I agree, that’s absolutely essential.

I know it can feel quite overwhelming at first to undertake a project like this on your own, especially without professional carpentry tools. But the Besta modules are actually very easy to handle, and securing the countertop is manageable as well. If you’re feeling nervous, take your time to measure everything carefully and double-check before drilling or gluing.

Another tip: when attaching the countertop, leave a few centimeters (inches) of space between it and the wall—this allows for minor movement due to temperature or humidity changes.

How are you feeling about your project so far? Do you already have specific dimensions for the countertop or your kitchen that you can share?

Attach the countertop preferably with sturdy angle brackets.
Connect Besta units with brackets for increased stability.
Choose a thicker panel (at least 2.5 cm (1 inch)), for example solid wood or a thick countertop from IKEA.
Divide storage space efficiently using drawers or boxes.
Protect the edge of the countertop (round off or use edge guards).

Hey, great project! I built something just like that and can say: go for it!

The key is to securely lock the Besta units together. I also installed a sturdy back panel that supports the entire frame well – it makes a huge difference in stability and prevents everything from wobbling.

For the countertop, I used a solid oak wood board fixed in place with wooden dowels and assembly adhesive. Not only does it look fantastic, but it also holds up very well!

I added storage with pull-out drawers and various inserts – that way everything is within easy reach, and the look stays clean.

Get started, this will be a really stylish project! Feel free to ask me if you need more details 🙂
