ᐅ How can I modify Ikea BESTA to use it as a storage solution for craft supplies?

benjuHello everyone, I’m planning to remodel my craft room using an Ikea BESTÅ modular unit as a storage solution for craft supplies and would appreciate some tips and experiences. Specifically, I want to know how best to adapt the BESTÅ series to organize small containers, fabrics, paper, and various tools efficiently. I have considered replacing the drawers with shelves and possibly adding dividers or boxes, but I’m not sure how flexible the BESTÅ system really is without doing custom modifications. Are there recommendations for specific accessories, clever combinations, or even modifications that are easy to implement? I’m also interested in how to change the appearance of the system so it doesn’t look too industrial but rather cozy and inspiring. Looking forward to your suggestions and solutions, preferably with practical examples!

My advice would be not to remove the drawers completely but to use small plastic inserts or dividers instead – it really helps keep things organized and prevents items from getting lost deep inside.
That sounds like a great plan already. What I also did: I attached small hook rails to the front of the doors, perfect for scissors, measuring tapes, and similar tools. And for the look – tape off the edges and paint the fronts with chalkboard paint, which creates a nice cozy effect and can also be used for writing notes. Maybe that will inspire you! 😄
I’d say do a mix of open and closed storage because open compartments encourage regular decluttering (since everything is visible), and closed ones keep dust out. Good luck!

Hello benju,
I completely understand how important a smart storage solution is, especially for craft materials, since you have to store many different sizes and shapes. What you want to do with the IKEA BESTÅ system is a solid foundation because it is very modular and can be expanded in many ways.
First, you should consider which materials you use most often and what type of opening you prefer – drawers make it easier to access small items, while shelves offer more flexibility for boxes.
An effective approach is to use shelves and then stackable or transparent containers so you can see the contents at a glance. Dividers made of wood or plastic can also help keep the BESTÅ drawers organized.
For the appearance, I recommend covering the fronts with fabric or decorating them with attractive wallpaper. Alternatively, wooden panels can be used as front replacements if you are handy. For a craft space, a relaxed, cozy look can be motivating and very practical.
If you like, I can put together some example measurements and combinations of shelves and containers for you. Just let me know!

for this purpose, the IKEA VARIERA containers are very useful. For example, you can place VARIERA boxes inside the BESTÅ shelves to organize small parts.
Additionally, elvarli rails on the sides are helpful for hanging tools.
You can also cover the front panels with furniture film if you want to change the appearance.
