Hello everyone, I am considering how to redesign my IKEA Besta system to function effectively as a room divider. Specifically, I want to incorporate as many open elements as possible to create an airy separation between two living areas without making the space feel completely closed off. I already have some plans, but I’m still looking for a solid approach to integrate the open elements without compromising stability and functionality. Does anyone have experience or tips on converting BESTA units into a room divider with open compartments? I’m especially interested in suggestions for connecting the units, possible modifications to the back panels, and the best combination of doors, drawers, and open cases.

You can feel that the open design brings an airy atmosphere but also requires maintenance and tidiness.

I think that argument is overrated. A room divider with open compartments is intentionally designed to break the usual routine and to incorporate some elements of disorder. Perfect tidiness is achievable by anyone, but that makes life boring.

I partly agree, but especially with furniture that separates two rooms, it is important to maintain a balance between aesthetics and functionality. Openness is only an advantage if the use and perception of the space are managed consciously and it does not turn into a cluttered, confusing mix.

My summary recommendation: For an open Besta room divider without a back panel, the modules should be securely screwed together using sturdy connectors. Open compartments should have fixed shelves. It is practical to include closed elements as a contrast to combine aesthetics and function. For stabilization, the unit can either be fixed to the wall or ceiling-mounted, depending on whether the room divider is intended to stand freely. Back panels can be replaced with acrylic glass as an alternative to achieve both openness and stability. This allows for a light and modern room divider.

Additionally, my advice is: Anyone planning to modify the BESTA modules should carefully study the IKEA assembly instructions. They explain important details about material load and joint mechanics. Beyond that, simple adjustments and brackets can create open elements that appear stable and lightweight. Adjust as needed.

I also recommend paying attention to the size of the boards used during the redesign. Although the BESTA carcasses are sturdy, they are not designed for large spans without a back panel. The open design should be supported by additional shelves or multiple smaller carcasses to prevent sagging.
