I am planning to convert my IKEA BESTÅ system into a modern TV unit and am looking for tips and experiences. Specifically, I’m interested in how to redesign the BESTÅ so that it not only looks contemporary but also meets current multimedia needs. I’m thinking of clean, simple lines with as few visible cables as possible, possibly integrated lighting, and practical use of the interior space for devices such as receivers, gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, etc.

Also, I’m wondering if you have any recommendations on accessories or modifications that have proven especially effective in making the unit look more high-end and modern. Maybe you also have ideas for surface treatments that can elevate the usually simple lacquer or melamine high-gloss finish to something more elegant.

I look forward to your suggestions!

Hello and thank you for your detailed question; it makes it easier to provide targeted advice. When converting the BESTÅ into a modern TV unit, there are several points to consider:

- First, accurately measure the basic dimensions of your TV and devices to organize the compartments efficiently.

- To minimize cable clutter, I recommend drilling small holes in the back panel or using pre-made cable grommets so you can neatly route HDMI, power, and audio cables out of sight.

- You can integrate lighting with LED strips, for example, by attaching them to the inner sides of the compartments; this enhances the furniture's appearance and provides light when needed.

- If you want to change the look, it’s worth replacing or repainting the fronts. Matte finishes in neutral colors tend to look more modern than glossy ones.

- For more structure, combine open and closed modules to showcase devices while hiding storage.

A quick tip: IKEA often sells accessories like glass shelves or special handles that you can use effectively.

If you have any specific questions or need advice on materials, feel free to ask!

I would like to add that ventilation for multimedia devices is essential during renovations. Many people overlook that enclosed furniture without sufficient air circulation can cause overheating, which reduces the lifespan of the equipment.

A modern solution is to use cut-out back panels or perforated boards, allowing air to circulate without compromising the minimalist design.

Integrating cable management systems such as cable channels or Velcro straps inside the furniture is also advisable to keep maintenance effort low.

Surface treatment: Matte acrylic paint or special films can easily change the appearance of the fronts. Painting with a quality primer and topcoat significantly increases durability.

Unassuming but important: The right hinges and fittings with soft-closing features provide a high-quality feel when opening and closing the doors.

That sounds very interesting, especially the idea with the LED strips. Do you have any recommendations on which type of LED strip is best suited for the interior of a BESTÅ unit? Is there anything special I should consider regarding the power supply if I want to install it myself?

Also, I like the tip about combining open and closed elements to make the design more dynamic. Would it be better to vary the sizes of the compartments, or is it more effective to mix completely different modules?

Would you recommend a professional paint finish for the surface, or is DIY painting sufficient? I’m aiming to make the furniture slightly darker and more matte without it looking too overwhelming.

Regarding LED lighting: Preferably use 12V DC LED strips, which are easy to install and generate little heat. An IP20 rating is usually sufficient for indoor areas, provided the strips are not exposed to moisture.

The power supply should be appropriately sized depending on the length of the LED strips. A 12V power supply with at least 1-2A output current is often adequate for common lengths.

For a clean installation, it is recommended to route the cables behind the walls of the BESTÅ unit and use prefabricated cable channels.

In terms of design: A mix of open and closed elements increases flexibility. Different module sizes can be combined without issues as long as the overall appearance remains balanced.

DIY painting is possible if the surfaces are well prepared: sanding, priming, and using matte polyurethane paints are advisable. For a more durable finish, professional powder coating or spray painting would be better, although these methods are significantly more complex and costly.

I agree with the recommendations but would like to add a point about stability. If you plan to place larger TVs on the BESTÅ unit, it can be helpful to secure the modules to the wall and, if necessary, add internal reinforcements.

Regarding surface treatment: Matte painted fronts often feel more premium to the touch, but they can also be more prone to scratches if the paint quality is not good.

Another option is to apply self-adhesive ABS edge banding or veneer to wooden edges to achieve a durable and modern appearance.

For cable management: I recommend planning channels or cable openings in the lower part of the TV cabinet as well, to accommodate the power supply for spotlights or soundbars and to avoid unnecessary cable clutter.
