Hello everyone,
I am planning to convert my IKEA Besta cabinets into a kitchen island that not only looks good but also offers plenty of storage space and a generous work surface. I want to avoid the island becoming too bulky and restricting the kitchen’s walkways too much.
My questions for the community:
- What is the best way to modify Besta cabinets for a kitchen island, for example with suitable countertops and adjustments to the cabinet layout?
- Which dimensions and module combinations make sense to create as much storage as possible while maintaining good usability?
- Are there any special tips for stabilizing the island, especially if it will also be used as a seating or work area?
- And which materials are best suited as a countertop for Besta cabinets?
I look forward to your experiences, advice, and constructive tips!

An additional note on stability: The cabinets should be firmly screwed together and securely fastened to the countertop. A back panel, even if not visible, significantly increases stability. For the seating area, a fixed wooden frame installed beneath the countertop helps prevent it from bending.
Regarding the countertop: HPL (high-pressure laminate) or lacquered solid wood panels are more resistant to scratches and moisture compared to plain wood panels.
