Hello everyone,

I am currently setting up our new apartment and have decided to use the Ikea Platsa system to create a flexible storage solution. However, I don’t want to use the PLATSA system in isolation; instead, I’d like to combine it effectively with other Ikea systems such as BESTÅ, KALLAX, or Hemnes—especially regarding visual harmony, attachment options, and functional aspects like optimizing storage space.

Therefore, I’m wondering: What is the best way to combine PLATSA with other Ikea systems without it looking mismatched? Are there special connectors or assembly ideas? Which combinations have worked well for you? And what should be considered in terms of dimensions and stability when linking, for example, a PLATSA unit with a BESTÅ module?

I look forward to your specific tips, experiences, and possible construction approaches so I can create a coherent overall look and practical solution for my apartment.

Hello Bisibla,

let’s dive into the topic. PLATSA is mainly known for its flexible frame and box construction, which adapts well to different room sizes and shapes. Regarding other Ikea systems, there are several points to consider:

- Visual compatibility: PLATSA has a relatively minimalist design with clean lines, similar to BESTÅ. The fronts of BESTÅ and PLATSA can be easily combined if you choose similar colors or handles.

- Assembly and connections: There are no official connectors that directly link PLATSA to other systems. This means you should either place the modules firmly next to each other or secure them with readily available brackets, custom wooden elements, or screws.

- Dimensions: PLATSA, for example, comes in base sizes of 40 cm (16 inches) or 60 cm (24 inches) in width, which fits well with KALLAX (48x147 cm / 19x58 inches) or BESTÅ (60 cm / 24 inches wide). It’s worth measuring carefully before purchasing to avoid any visible gaps.

- Stability: If you stack two systems (e.g., PLATSA on top and BESTÅ below), make sure the weight is distributed evenly and that sturdy back panels are used.

Many of my friends often use PLATSA in combination with BESTÅ, as the color range and modular concept complement each other well.

Do you already have specific combinations in mind?

Hello,

to be precise, PLATSA and other IKEA systems are fundamentally independent product systems with their own assembly principles and module dimensions.

For a successful combination, the following points are recommended:

- Check dimensional compatibility. For example, PLATSA is available in widths of 40, 60, and 80 cm (16, 24, and 31½ inches), while BESTÅ is usually 60 cm (24 inches) wide. This allows modules to be arranged in a row without creating visual breaks.

- Match front design: Use similar or identical fronts and handles to achieve a cohesive appearance.

- Use connectors: Official system connectors between PLATSA and, for example, BESTÅ do not exist. Therefore, when combining systems outside the recommendations, independent fixing with brackets or screws is necessary to ensure stability.

- Stability and load capacity: PLATSA modules are designed to be flexibly stackable, but when combining different systems, the highest load limit of the involved elements should not be exceeded.

- Plan according to room dimensions and usage requirements: It is especially important to consider room height, depth, and purpose (storage, media furniture, etc.) when combining, as, for example, KALLAX or HEMNES differ significantly in depth and height.

In practical combination, I recommend making concrete plans using design tools and then measuring the desired combinations on-site at the IKEA planning center, where adjustments can be made if necessary.

A specific recommendation for combining PLATSA and BESTÅ is a side-by-side arrangement with matching heights or low PLATSA modules placed on BESTÅ base units to create versatile storage and media surfaces. This works well with the use of identical color schemes.

That’s correct. The important thing is that you build the connection yourself using brackets or screws. Accurate measurement alignment is crucial. PLATSA 40 or 60 fits well next to BESTÅ 60. When stacking, always pay attention to weight and stability.

That’s the best advice here.

Exactly, and if you want to combine versions with doors and drawers, you should also ensure that the fronts do not cause overlaps or alignment issues.

I also recommend firmly securing the back panels of the units—especially in combined systems—to stabilize the overall structure.

And if you want to add KALLAX, simple wooden boards can serve as connectors because KALLAX has an open frame while PLATSA is fully enclosed.

If you have any questions about specific variations, feel free to ask!
