Hello everyone,
I am currently working on a DIY project and want to combine my Ikea Besta cabinet with wooden fronts to create a higher-quality and more homely appearance. I am particularly interested in how to best mount the wooden fronts – whether it is better to use special adapters or adhesive methods, and what to pay attention to regarding stability and aesthetics. I also find the choice of colors and wood types intriguing: Does a dark-stained oak wood suit the often white or black Besta carcasses better, or do lighter wood fronts harmonize more effectively?
Has anyone here already built such combinations and can share experiences about which wood types are suitable, whether the standard fastenings should be modified, and how to cleanly resolve any gaps? Any detailed instructions, tips on the process, or advice on potential pitfalls would be very helpful for me.
Thanks in advance for your time and support!

Hello didoso,
I find your question about combining Ikea Besta with wooden fronts very interesting and would like to suggest a systematic approach.
First of all, you should consider the following:
- Fastening: The easiest way is to use the original Besta fixings, provided your wooden fronts are properly adjusted (hole spacing, etc.). Alternatively, adapter plates are available to make installation easier.
- Wood types: Oak works very well because it is durable and visually complements white or black carcasses nicely. Dark woods create strong contrasts, while lighter ones result in a more harmonious look.
- Surfaces: Make sure the wooden fronts are well sealed to prevent warping caused by moisture.
Typical mistakes often involve inaccurate drilling or unsuitable thickness of the wooden fronts, which affects the hinges.
My tip:
- Measure the drill holes of the Besta doors precisely and transfer them exactly to your wooden fronts.
- Use drilling templates and a sharp wood drill bit.
- Initially assemble temporarily to check gaps and alignment.
- You may need to adjust the hinges slightly; Ikea hinges usually allow some play here.
Regarding surface colors: With a white carcass, light oak appears warm and inviting, while dark wood creates contrast – here you should consider your interior style.
In summary, it is definitely doable if you maintain precision when drilling and assembling and use the right materials.
I’m happy to go into more detail on specific points if you like.

NICOLELIS20 Mar 2020 13:29I have just completed a similar setup: I used the Ikea fasteners, then simply attached the wooden fronts with the appropriate dowels and screws. Precise drilling is crucial for a clean result. In my opinion, oak matches very well with black Besta carcasses.

I did the same and was a bit unsure at first because I wasn’t sure whether to leave too much or too little clearance for the fronts. After a few adjustments, it fit perfectly.
What was important to me: The wooden fronts need to be sealed very carefully; otherwise, they might warp. I chose oiled oak wood because it looks warm and goes very well with the white Besta carcasses.
Sometimes I had doubts since I’m not a professional, but with some patience and precise work, it was really enjoyable – the result looks very high-quality! I would definitely do it the same way again.
