Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Besta furniture set at home with matte surfaces that I would like to clean gently. The matte finish should not be damaged, and I especially want to avoid unsightly streaks, shiny spots, or even scratches after cleaning.

Does anyone know good methods or home remedies that are particularly suitable for cleaning matte surfaces on Besta?

So far, I often use a damp microfiber cloth, but I’m unsure if that is gentle enough or if there are better cleaning products that preserve the matte appearance.

It is also important to me that the cleaning is not just superficial but also reliably removes grease or fingerprints without damaging the surface.

I look forward to tips and experiences, even if it’s about similar furniture with matte fronts—there seem to be various types of finishes and materials.

Best regards!

I generally recommend using very mild cleaning agents on matte surfaces to avoid damaging the paint texture or causing unwanted gloss. Here are some tips:

- Use only a well-wrung, soft microfiber cloth to avoid leaving moisture or dirt residue on the surface.
- To remove grease or fingerprints, you can mix some lukewarm water with a small amount of a mild, pH-neutral dish soap.
- Avoid harsh cleaners or alcohol-based products, as these can damage the matte finish.
- Always test new cleaning agents on an inconspicuous spot before treating the entire surface.

An easy method is to simply wipe the surface with plain water and the microfiber cloth, and if needed, gently spot-clean with a little dish soap. Avoid scrubbing too hard to preserve the matte appearance.

I would like to agree with this and add some further tips on how to clean matte surfaces on IKEA Besta units as gently and effectively as possible:

- Start with a dry, clean microfiber cloth to carefully remove dust particles. This helps prevent scratches caused by dirt.
- If more cleaning power is needed, lightly dampen the microfiber cloth with clear, lukewarm water.
- For stubborn dirt or grease, mix a few drops of a mild, fragrance-free dishwashing liquid into water. Use sparingly.
- After cleaning, wipe the surface again with a dry microfiber cloth to avoid water spots.

Important: Never use abrasive cleaners, chlorine-based products, alcohol, or solvents — these can irreversibly damage the matte surface or cause shiny patches.

A damp microfiber cloth is indeed one of the best methods. If there are stubborn stains, I recommend a gentle cleaning with mild dishwashing liquid rather than going straight to chemical products.

When in doubt, you can also test the product on a less visible area first.

Also, avoid spraying cleaners directly onto the surface to maintain better control of the application.

This is an important point. Precision and control are essential when cleaning matte surfaces.

In addition to the ongoing discussion, I would like to address the characteristics of IKEA Besta matte lacquered surfaces:

- These are usually made from melamine-coated engineered wood or lacquered MDF panels with a matte finish.
- Melamine is very scratch- and abrasion-resistant but not resistant to chemical solvents or harsh cleaners.
- Lacquered MDF panels are more sensitive to abrasive agents and aggressive substances.

Summary for cleaning:

- Dry dusting with a soft microfiber cloth
- Damp wiping with lukewarm water and a very mild dish soap (no alcohol, vinegar, or ammonia)
- Immediate wiping dry with a dry cloth
- Do not use rough sponges or abrasive cleaners

For heavy grease or fingerprints, you can alternatively use special plastic cleaners suitable for matte surfaces—but only if they are explicitly recommended for these materials.

I would generally advise against home remedies like vinegar or citric acid due to the risk of damage.
