Good morning everyone, I have a somewhat specific question regarding the cleaning of my matte Ikea Metod kitchen fronts. These fronts tend to be somewhat prone to grease and water splashes, which unfortunately are not easy to remove without damaging the matte surface or using unnecessarily harsh cleaning agents.

Therefore, I would like to know: How can I thoroughly and effectively clean my matte Ikea Metod kitchen fronts while using only environmentally friendly methods and products? I am particularly interested in home remedies or biological cleaning agents that do not leave harmful residues or damage the surface.

Has anyone had experience with specific ingredients or cleaning procedures that work well without discoloring, attacking, or causing shiny spots on the fronts?

I look forward to practical tips and possible recommendations!

I would try a mild soapy solution – dissolve a few drops of dish soap in warm water, use a soft sponge, and then wipe again with clean water.

This is usually sufficient and very environmentally friendly, especially if you use biodegradable dish soap.

To answer the question of how to clean matte Ikea Metod kitchen fronts in an environmentally friendly way, I would like to provide you with a deeper insight into cleaning agents and their effects.

A matte surface is sensitive to overly aggressive substances because it is often microporous or coated with a special paint that:
- can be damaged by harsh chemicals
- may develop glossy spots or color changes if treated incorrectly

My recommendation starts with choosing a mild, pH-neutral cleaning agent. Home remedies like vinegar or citric acid should be used cautiously on matte fronts, as their acidity can damage the paint. Especially vinegar can lead to peeling over time.

A well-proven solution is simple soapy water made from natural soap or a biodegradable dish detergent, mixed with lukewarm water. Important here:
- Use only a soft, lint-free cloth or microfiber polishing cloth
- Do not use abrasive sponges or brushes
- After cleaning, always wipe the fronts with clear water and gently dry them to avoid water spots

If you have particularly greasy areas, you can first spray them with a mixture of water and a small amount of mild dish detergent and gently wipe after a short reaction time.

I am curious about how heavy the soiling is in your case and whether you sometimes need to treat stubborn stains? Which cleaning agents have you tried so far?

Thank you for the detailed response, kulau. The dirt is mostly grease and water splashes from cooking or eating, so rather everyday messes, not heavy or dried-on stains. So far, I’ve mostly used a damp, soft cloth with a little dish soap, but often a slight film of dirt remains, which I then remove with a stronger cleaner (sometimes even all-purpose cleaner) – which I’d actually like to avoid.

So stubborn stains are not the issue, but rather gentle daily cleaning without residue or streaks.

Is there perhaps a homemade spray solution that is milder and more effective than simple soapy water?

Hello renko, for daily cleaning of matte surfaces, a gentle homemade spray solution often helps, made from the following ingredients:
- 500 ml lukewarm water (about 17 fl oz)
- 1 tablespoon biodegradable dish soap
- 1 teaspoon baking soda (baking powder without additives also works)

Baking soda is a mild, alkaline powder that helps break down light grease without being harsh or damaging the finish. This combination provides effective cleaning with a low environmental impact.

Application:
- Spray the solution onto the matte surface from about 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) away
- Let it sit for 1–2 minutes
- Then wipe off with a soft, damp cloth

Remember to rinse with clean water afterwards to remove any residue. It is important not to leave the surface wet to avoid water spots and damage.

In general, I recommend wiping regularly and cleaning briefly and often rather than infrequently and thoroughly. This prevents grease buildup.

What is your routine for kitchen care? Does anyone use other alternative household remedies?

This is an important point I would like to add: baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is very effective at dissolving grease without affecting the surface tension or structure of the finish. For matte surfaces, it is even more beneficial than many acid-based cleaners.

Furthermore, for matte Ikea Metod fronts, the following should be considered:
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or sponges with rough surfaces
- If water spots appear, remove them immediately with a lint-free cloth instead of letting them dry
- Avoid applying solutions containing alcohol or solvents, as these can dissolve matte finishes

Additionally, I have had good experience with microfiber cloths because they work very gently and pick up dirt particles without scratching or polishing the surface.

To protect the surface, occasional use of a care product specifically designed for matte plastic or painted surfaces without silicones can be beneficial. However, this should only be used according to the manufacturer's instructions and in small amounts.
