Hello everyone, I have had matte fronts on my IKEA Metod kitchen for some time now and am facing the challenge of cleaning them properly without damaging the surface. The fronts appear to be covered with a matte film – a somewhat sensitive material that can easily get scratched or become dull if cleaned incorrectly.

My main question is: What is the best way to clean matte Metod fronts to remove fingerprints, grease, or everyday dirt without harming or damaging the surface? Are there any specific cleaning products or home remedies that have proven effective? I definitely want to avoid using overly aggressive cleaners or abrasive sponges.

I would appreciate tips on the cleaning process (which products to use, how to apply them, what tools like microfiber cloths to use) and advice on what to avoid doing!

To add to the previous explanations:

Matte foil fronts, like those from the IKEA Metod series, are usually made of MDF coated with a plastic foil. This surface is durable against everyday household dirt but is sensitive to solvents and mechanical stress.

From a technical perspective, the safest and most effective cleaner is a mild alkaline solution with a neutral pH close to 7. Using dish soap in lukewarm water meets this requirement.

For application, the following applies:
- Always apply the cleaning agent with a well-wrung microfiber cloth,
- do not use in strong concentrations,
- avoid abrasive sponges or brushes.

Incorrect cleaning agents (such as ammonia-based window cleaners or alcohol-based products) can cause microstructural damage, altering the matte finish and ultimately damaging the foil.

Additionally, it is recommended to always wipe down with clean water after cleaning and dry with a soft, dry cloth. This prevents residues and streaks.

Never use scouring pads or harsh cleaners on the surfaces.

A microfiber cloth with dish soap and water is the recommended method. Follow by wiping with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.

You summarized that very well. I would like to add that when cleaning, it’s important to avoid saturating the surfaces, as moisture at the edges can loosen the adhesive bonds.

In my experience, a mixture of mild dish soap and warm water works best for lightly greasy dirt.

It’s also important not to scrub hard but to apply gentle pressure.

Sometimes it helps to wring out the microfiber cloth occasionally to prevent dirt particles from scratching the surface.

I hope this is helpful to others interested in this thread!
