Hello everyone, I have had matte fronts on my IKEA Metod kitchen for some time now and am facing the challenge of cleaning them properly without damaging the surface. The fronts appear to be covered with a matte film – a somewhat sensitive material that can easily get scratched or become dull if cleaned incorrectly.

My main question is: What is the best way to clean matte Metod fronts to remove fingerprints, grease, or everyday dirt without harming or damaging the surface? Are there any specific cleaning products or home remedies that have proven effective? I definitely want to avoid using overly aggressive cleaners or abrasive sponges.

I would appreciate tips on the cleaning process (which products to use, how to apply them, what tools like microfiber cloths to use) and advice on what to avoid doing!

Hello ruka30, I’m happy to provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to gently and effectively clean your matte IKEA Metod cabinet fronts.

1. Basic rule: Avoid using harsh scouring agents or abrasive sponges, as these can permanently damage the matte surface.
2. Cleaning solution: Mix lukewarm water with a small amount of mild dish soap (a few drops).
3. Cleaning tool: Always use a soft microfiber cloth.
4. Procedure: Dip the microfiber cloth into the solution, wring it out thoroughly so it is only damp. Then gently wipe the front surfaces.
5. Rinsing: Wipe again with a lightly damp cloth to remove any residue.
6. Drying: Finally, dry the surface to prevent water spots.

What to avoid:
- Window cleaners containing alcohol or ammonia, as these can dull the finish.
- Scouring agents or steel wool.
- Highly concentrated cleaning products.

Summary: Using mild soapy water and a microfiber cloth is the safest and most effective method to clean without causing damage. If there are stubborn stains, a small amount of baking soda paste can help, but test it carefully first. I hope this helps!

I clean my matte Metod fronts with a soft microfiber cloth and lukewarm water, sometimes using a mild dish detergent. Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive agents, as they can cause scratches.

Hello ruka30, I completely understand your concern, as matte surfaces can often be quite delicate. My advice is to first check whether your microfiber cloth is truly soft, since rough fibers can scratch the surface.

I also recommend testing any cleaning product on an inconspicuous area before applying it widely. Some cleaners may alter the matte finish and leave shiny spots.

If you still notice streaks after regular cleaning, you can dry the fronts with a lint-free cloth and possibly follow up with a special plastic conditioner designed for matte surfaces. These care products help preserve the surface and protect it from new dirt.

If you like, I can also give you a detailed recommendation for care products that I have tested successfully myself.

Thanks for the tips already!

@TEOZAR: Would you recommend a special cleaning spray for matte plastic or foil surfaces? Or is just water and some dish soap really enough?

I’m also interested in whether you wipe the fronts with a wet cloth, meaning the cloth is really damp, or rather slightly damp, as too much water might damage the foil?

If anyone has experience with home remedies, feel free to share – do vinegar solutions or very diluted alcohol have a chance, or do they harm the surface more?

Hello ruka30, I’ll take this up and add some answers to your questions:

- Basically, you should never use vinegar or alcohol on matte Metod fronts. These substances can damage adhesives and films, causing your fronts to discolor or become dull.

- Regarding moisture level: The cloth should be well wrung out, more like damp rather than dripping wet. Standing water can damage the film at edges or seams.

- Often, mild dish soap in lukewarm water is completely sufficient. If you want to use a cleaning spray, make sure it is alcohol-free and non-abrasive.

- Home remedy: A mixture of water and a little baking soda can help remove stubborn dirt. Dissolve the powder in water beforehand, but do not apply it as a grainy paste directly to avoid scratches.

Summary: Mild soapy water, a well-wrung microfiber cloth, no aggressive or acidic agents. This will prevent damage.
