Hello everyone, I recently bought a few Malm furniture pieces from IKEA and want to clean them properly without damaging the finish. As far as I know, the finish is quite delicate, so I’m wondering which cleaning products and methods are best suited to remove grease stains, dust, or light dirt without leaving streaks or dull spots.

Can someone give me specific advice on what to use – for example, if a slightly damp microfiber cloth is enough, or if I should use special furniture care products? Do household cleaners like dish soap really work well, or are they too harsh? I’m also curious if rough cloths or sponges might cause damage to the Malm finish.

I just want to avoid the beautiful shine or surface being permanently affected after cleaning. Maybe there are some home remedies that have proven effective? I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences!

Thanks for the tip, that sounds really important. Are there any specific products I should definitely avoid? For example, some people use glass cleaner at home – are those unsuitable because of the alcohol content?

If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, try testing it first on an inconspicuous spot.

I think that’s a good idea, I’ll definitely give it a try.

Maybe you could also briefly tell me how often you clean and maintain furniture like Malm? I don’t want to clean too often, but also not too rarely.

I would avoid using glass cleaner on paint, as it often contains alcohol which can damage the finish. It’s best to use just water with a little mild dish soap.

Regular dusting is usually enough; a more thorough cleaning is only necessary when there are spots or stains.

That’s exactly right! Glass cleaners, ammonia-based cleaners, solvents, or strong degreasers can damage or dull the paint surface.

Regarding cleaning frequency: Dusting once a week is a good routine, and for stains, you can do a targeted damp wipe. I wouldn’t use furniture care products too often to avoid residue buildup.

If you notice scratches, you can carefully touch them up with a very fine polishing cloth and a suitable paint care product, but this should only be considered once any damage appears.

If you like, I can gladly recommend some products that I personally recommend.
