Hello everyone, I recently bought a few Malm furniture pieces from IKEA and want to clean them properly without damaging the finish. As far as I know, the finish is quite delicate, so I’m wondering which cleaning products and methods are best suited to remove grease stains, dust, or light dirt without leaving streaks or dull spots.
Can someone give me specific advice on what to use – for example, if a slightly damp microfiber cloth is enough, or if I should use special furniture care products? Do household cleaners like dish soap really work well, or are they too harsh? I’m also curious if rough cloths or sponges might cause damage to the Malm finish.
I just want to avoid the beautiful shine or surface being permanently affected after cleaning. Maybe there are some home remedies that have proven effective? I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello Maon42, I completely understand your concern. Malm furniture is usually coated with a thin layer of lacquer, which gives it a nice shine but can be sensitive to harsh cleaners or excessive moisture.
My tip: Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth lightly dampened with warm water. For greasy spots, you can carefully add a few drops of mild dish soap to the water, but be sure to wipe it off thoroughly afterwards and never leave the surface wet.
Avoid abrasive cleaners or rough sponges, as they can scratch the lacquer finish.
If you like, you can gently polish the furniture afterwards with a special furniture polish designed for lacquered surfaces – this provides extra protection and helps prevent the finish from dulling quickly.
Feel free to ask if you have any other questions or doubts!

I used to have Malm furniture with a lacquer finish and was initially always uncertain about how to clean it. Fortunately, it has proven effective to never wipe it too wet and to avoid harsh cleaning agents. Sometimes I even feel that a soft microfiber cloth does more for my furniture than various cleaning products. If you’re willing to experiment a bit, try testing first on an inconspicuous spot.
I hope you find a method that feels right for you and helps keep your furniture looking good for a long time. 🙂
If you like, I can also tell you how I occasionally deal with small scratches on lacquered surfaces.

It’s great that you put so much effort into properly caring for Malm furniture! 😀
I also always use a microfiber cloth, and sometimes I prepare a little dish soap in lukewarm water, just like @Ethan described. Afterwards, I wipe down with clean water and thoroughly dry the furniture to preserve its shine!
I also find it motivating when furniture is cleaned so well that it lasts a long time and always looks fresh 🙂 Keep it up!
