Hello everyone, I recently purchased some Ikea Platsa furniture and want to clean it as effectively and gently as possible. My question to the community is: What is the best way to clean Ikea Platsa furniture without damaging the surfaces or affecting the materials? I am particularly interested in which cleaning agents are suitable, whether there are specific methods for different surface types (e.g., lacquered, melamine, or coatings), and how to remove stubborn stains. Are there also tips for preventing dirt and for maintenance to keep the furniture looking good for as long as possible? I look forward to your recommendations and experiences.
Regarding edges and their protection, I recommend the following approach:
- Generally, the edges of Ikea Platsa furniture are melamine-coated or covered with plastic, so contact with water should be avoided.
- Sealing with special furniture edge sealants (e.g., polymer-based) can enhance protection, but this is not strictly necessary if regular maintenance is carried out.
- It is important to remove dirt as soon as possible and dry off any moisture immediately.
- If sealants are used, choosing solvent-free, transparent products is advisable to preserve appearance and texture.
- Under normal household conditions, I recommend starting with cleaning using a dry cloth and occasional wiping with a damp cloth to prevent damage.
If there is significant moisture exposure or stress (e.g., in a child’s room), sealing could be considered additionally.

Do you have any experience with whether it makes sense to treat these edges with a special protective coating or sealant? That is a valid question, especially with melamine-coated edges. In my experience, an additional sealant is generally not necessary if you clean carefully and regularly and avoid moisture buildup.
However, if you live in a very humid environment or have very sensitive use conditions (e.g., children, pets), a special sealant based on plastic that dries clear can extend the lifespan of the edges.
Be sure to test the product on an inconspicuous area first to check whether it changes the appearance. Personally, I would rely more on thoroughly drying the surface after cleaning rather than applying an extra sealant, to maintain better control.
