I recently purchased an IKEA Platsa wardrobe system with several drawers. Now I’m wondering how to clean these drawers in the best and most material-friendly way, without damaging the surfaces or causing moisture damage. Specifically, I’m referring to the plastic and wood fiber surfaces of the Platsa drawers – what cleaning products are safe to use, and what should I avoid? Are there any proven, gentle cleaning agents or techniques that work well for regular maintenance?
I want to prevent the drawers from swelling, discoloring, or sticking. Therefore, I’m also interested in whether it’s better to remove the drawers completely for thorough cleaning, or if cleaning them while still installed is practical and effective.
Thanks for your tips and shared experiences!

It’s best to use a damp microfiber cloth with some mild dish soap.I can fully support this approach. When it comes to IKEA PLATSA drawers, it’s important to protect the surfaces from moisture. Therefore, I recommend the following procedure:
- Remove the drawers completely from the frame
- Wipe inside and outside with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth
- Use a mild, pH-neutral cleaning agent—avoid solvents or harsh chemicals
- After wiping, dry the drawers thoroughly to prevent swelling
The material properties of the PLATSA drawers—mainly coated wood fiberboard and plastics—are sensitive to excessive moisture. A quick but thorough cleaning method is therefore advisable. To protect the surface, I also recommend avoiding abrasive sponges or sharp tools to prevent scratches.

Now I am wondering how to best clean these drawers in a way that preserves the material and avoids damaging the surfaces or causing moisture problems.Hey, that’s a great question! 😉 From my experience: if you’re going to remove the drawers anyway, give them a little cleaning treatment with a microfiber cloth and a mild cleaner. Damp, not wet – otherwise the surfaces could have issues. Very important: wipe them dry thoroughly because PLATSA doesn’t like staying damp inside.
Especially the corners and edges of the drawers tend to collect dust, so a soft brush helps to reach the small crevices. With regular care, everything stays as nice as on the first day. And hey, while you’re at it, you can also quickly check the drawer slides for wear and maybe apply a little lubricant if needed. That way everything runs smoothly – literally! 😄

Very important: Wipe thoroughly and dry well, because PLATSA doesn’t like it when moisture remains inside.Exactly, this is crucial. In addition, I recommend the following points:
- Use only mild cleaning agents without solvents or strong alcohols, as these can damage the surface.
- If stains cannot be removed with a damp cloth, test the cleaning product first discreetly on a corner.
- For the exterior of the drawers, special furniture care wipes are also suitable, as they leave a protective film that repels moisture.
- Removing the drawers is advisable for hygiene reasons, as cleaning options are significantly better then.
Overall, careful and thorough handling considerably extends the service life.
