Elton70Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I purchased an Ikea Pax wardrobe system with painted wood surfaces. Now I am facing the challenge of cleaning these surfaces properly and gently, as I want to avoid discoloration and stains. My question is: What is the best way to clean Ikea Pax wooden surfaces with a painted finish without damaging the paint or the wood texture?
I have already tried mild cleaning agents but am unsure if they are suitable. I am also interested in tips for preventing scratches and how to remove stubborn dirt, such as greasy fingerprints or settled dust.
Thank you in advance for your experienced advice and recommendations!

I would recommend using a soft, lint-free cloth, preferably slightly dampened with lukewarm water. That’s a good start, but I would like to explain in more detail.
Painted wood surfaces, like those used in Ikea Pax units, are quite durable but sensitive to excessive moisture and inappropriate cleaning products. Therefore, you should:
- Avoid using harsh cleaners (no alcohol, no abrasives, no solvents).
- Use a soft microfiber or cotton cloth that is only slightly damp.
- Wipe off dirt as soon as possible to prevent it from drying and setting.
- For greasy fingerprints, I recommend a mild dish soap diluted sparingly in water.
- Always follow up by wiping with a dry cloth to avoid standing moisture.
For stubborn dirt, you can gently use a standard furniture cleaner designed for painted surfaces, but always test it first on an inconspicuous area.
To prevent damage: avoid direct sunlight exposure and make sure no sharp objects come into contact with the surface; this will help maintain the paint’s appearance for a long time.

It’s best to wipe off dirt immediately so it doesn’t dry and stick.I completely agree – nothing dulls the shine of painted wood faster than dried-on stains!
A few small tips from me, with a wink:
- For everyday cleaning, use a soft, damp cloth. Dust isn’t too harmful, but wiping when it’s too dry can cause tiny scratches.
- For occasional extra care, you can use a special lacquer care product that adds a protective layer and gives that certain “wow effect” to your vintage Pax.
- And very important: avoid harsh all-purpose cleaners – our cabinet beauties don’t like those at all.
If you follow this advice, your Pax will look not just clean, but truly well cared for – almost like it’s had its own spa treatment.
