LobefuHello everyone, I am currently having the problem that I cannot properly clean my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet fronts, especially stubborn grease is causing me concern. The fronts usually have a matte lacquer finish, and of course, I want to avoid damaging the surface or affecting the finish. My question: What is the best way to clean Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet fronts when stubborn grease has built up? Which cleaning agents or home remedies are suitable without harming the surface? Are there any special methods or tips to consider to effectively remove grease while preserving the material structure of the fronts? I look forward to your helpful advice and experiences!

What is the best way to clean Ikea Metod kitchen fronts when stubborn grease has built up? Interesting question, especially because of the matte finish. Before giving a general recommendation, do you know the exact material of your fronts? Are they genuine MDF boards with a foil coating, or more like painted wood?
That would affect the cleaning method.
In general, I advise against using aggressive solvents as they can damage the finish. But "stubborn" is relative. What exactly do you mean by stubborn grease? Old oil or cooking residues that have been there for several days or weeks? Or more like fresh grease splashes?
Without specific details, any recommendation is only tentative. I’m asking to better narrow down the issue.

Do you know exactly what material your fronts are made of? Real MDF boards with a foil coating or rather painted wood? According to Ikea, the fronts have a melamine resin coating, which means a matte, scratch-resistant surface. Not real wood, but a coated particleboard.

What exactly do you mean by stubborn grease? Basically, it’s baked-on cooking fumes and grease film that has accumulated over weeks, especially on the handles and around the stove area. Usually, the grease dries there, sometimes combined with slight crusting from food. Regular wiping with dish detergent and water only helps to a limited extent.
I’m careful not to damage the surface, so abrasive sponges are off-limits. That’s why I’m looking for an effective method that won’t harm the material but still removes the dirt. Possibly also tips on how to better dissolve the grease film.

Here is my step-by-step suggestion:
- Start by gently wiping with a soft microfiber cloth and warm water plus a few drops of mild dish soap. This removes fresh grease deposits.
- For dried-on or baked-in grease, a mixture of water and vinegar essence (about 10-15%) is recommended, as acetic acid breaks down grease without being too harsh.
- Spray the mixture onto the surface with a spray bottle and let it sit briefly—not too long, as acetic acid can affect other surfaces.
- Then carefully treat the stain with a soft, non-scratching sponge.
- After treatment, wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove any vinegar residue.
- Avoid applying too much pressure on the fronts, as this can damage the finish.
- For tougher crusts, you can also use pH-neutral kitchen cleaners, but always test on an inconspicuous spot first.
Question: Do you also use grease-catching mats or range hoods to reduce the formation of new grease films? This can help keep cleaning efforts to a minimum in the long run.

I like to clean my Metod fronts with a mixture of warm water and dish soap.
For stubborn grease, I use a microfiber cloth with a bit more dish soap.
Be careful with abrasive cleaners or brushes, as they can damage the surface!
Vinegar water can help, but test it on a small area first.
