hunter62Hello everyone, some time ago I installed a kitchen with IKEA Metod glass fronts and now I want to clean them properly without causing any damage. Since I have read that certain cleaning agents or incorrect methods can harm the glass or the surrounding frames, I would appreciate specific tips on gentle and effective cleaning. I am particularly interested in: Which cleaning products are safe to use? Is it okay to use microfiber cloths, or are special cleaning cloths better? How should stubborn stains be treated? And are there any special recommendations for maintenance to prevent scratches or dulling over time? Thank you for your well-informed experiences and advice!
Hello hunter62, I agree with the recommendation to use mild dish soap and microfiber cloths, but I would like to elaborate a bit more. IKEA Metod glass fronts are usually made of coated safety glass or tempered glass (ESG), which is quite durable but can become dull over time if exposed to harsh cleaning agents like ammonia or abrasive cleaners. Therefore, it is important not to use high-gloss cleaners or alcohol. Also, abrasive sponges or steel wool should never be used. For stains that cannot be removed with dish soap, a mixture of water and vinegar (approximately 1:1) can be used, but only sparingly and followed by thorough wiping and drying to avoid leaving vinegar residues that could damage the coating.
Regarding microfiber cloths: they are definitely the best choice because they effectively pick up dirt without causing mechanical scratches. It is important that these cloths are clean and not used with dirt particles or sand, to prevent damage.
Additionally, I recommend cleaning the glass fronts regularly and proactively to prevent deposits from drying on. Regular, gentle maintenance will result in significantly fewer problems over time and will help keep the fronts shiny.
If you have any questions about choosing suitable cleaning products, I’m happy to help.

IKEA Metod glass fronts are usually made of coated safety glass or tempered glass, which is quite durable but can become dull over time due to aggressive cleaning agents such as ammonia or abrasives. This is an important point, as many people tend to use so-called "proven" cleaning products without considering the effects over a longer period. However, I wonder if IKEA’s own manufacturer information provides more specific recommendations here, since only that way can one be sure of what the glass material can actually withstand.
Additionally, it would be worth discussing how mechanical factors—such as vigorous wiping or using cloths with foreign particles—can affect the surface and any coatings. Apparently, some users report dark phantom streaks after cleaning—could this be due to the chemical composition of the cleaning agents or perhaps from drying too quickly?
I also think it’s important to consider whether we are talking about the bare glass itself or fronts that include frames made of plastic or metal. Depending on the material, limits of the cleaning products should be observed.
Great topic! I regularly cleaned my IKEA Metod glass fronts using the same method and can definitely agree that microfiber cloths and mild dish soap are the way to go! 🙂
One thing I’d like to add: always test any new cleaning product on an inconspicuous area first. Don’t apply too much pressure—glass is sturdy, but the coating can be sensitive.
And don’t worry, with a bit of patience and proper care, the glass will look like new even after months! Stay consistent, and stubborn stains won’t get a chance to set in.
