lodylanoHello everyone, I have recently been focusing on the care of my IKEA Metod kitchen countertops and am looking for a gentle, scratch-free cleaning method. The surfaces seem sensitive to abrasive sponges and harsh cleaners, which makes it challenging to clean them thoroughly while being careful not to damage them. Does anyone have experience or specific tips on how to best clean these countertops without causing microscopic scratches? I am especially interested in recommendations for suitable cleaning products and which tools work best to maintain the appearance for as long as possible. Thank you in advance for any helpful advice!
Hello lodylano,
In general, I recommend using only soft cloths for IKEA Metod countertops, which often have a melamine or plastic coating. Microfiber cloths, for example, are gentle and do not leave scratches.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, even if they are advertised as "non-scratching."
- For tougher stains, a solution of lukewarm water with a few drops of mild dish soap works quite well.
- Thoroughly dry the surface afterward to prevent streaks or spots.
If stubborn stains persist, you can carefully use a very fine sponge (not a steel wool substitute), but always gently.
I have personally had good experiences with this approach. It is also important to avoid acidic cleaners, as they can damage the surface.

I usually use lukewarm water with a small amount of dish soap, just enough to remove greasy spots, and then wipe it down. The important thing is to avoid abrasive sponges – scrubbing harshly just isn’t worth it 😄. For extra shine, you can wipe again with a dry cloth, which makes the surface sparkle without any damage.
Thank you for the initial helpful tips! I’m also interested to know if anyone is aware of any differences between the smooth and textured Metod worktops in terms of cleaning. Could it be that the textured surface is somewhat more sensitive, or are there any special recommendations? Additionally, I’d like to know the best way to restore a slightly smooth, non-dull feel to the worktops after cleaning. I have the impression that this might help better protect some surfaces against new dirt.
Hello lodylano,
Regarding your question about smooth versus textured surfaces: textured surfaces can attract slightly more dirt because they have small indentations. Therefore, I recommend always cleaning with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth or soft sponge, applying gentle pressure to avoid damaging the texture.
As for the feel: after cleaning, you can use a special care product designed for coated surfaces, which often provides slight water repellency and keeps the surface smooth. Make sure it is not an oil- or wax-based product, as those can leave the surface greasy and attract new dirt. Some users also have good experiences with environmentally friendly products containing silicone. It is important not to overdo the care treatment to avoid residue buildup.
