Good morning everyone,

I have a question that has been on my mind since installing my new IKEA Metod kitchen with the countertops: What is the best way to clean the countertops without causing scratches?

I have noticed that some cleaning products and methods can damage the surface or leave small scratches. My countertop has a matte finish, not a high-gloss coating, but I still want to clean it thoroughly, especially after cooking, without harming the surface.

Does anyone have experience with specific cleaning agents or techniques that are gentle yet effective at removing dirt?

It would also be important for me to know if there are any products or methods I should definitely avoid to prevent micro-scratches.

I’m really looking forward to your tips and advice!

For cleaning, I use a soft cloth and soapy water. Occasionally, I wipe with a window cloth to keep the surface streak-free. So far, I haven’t had any scratches, even though the kitchen is used daily.

Do not expose the countertop to sharp objects or harsh chemicals.

That’s correct. To add to that, I would also advise avoiding abrasive cleaners or metallic scouring pads. They might seem effective, especially on stubborn dirt, but they significantly damage the surface.

Here’s a tip that helped my mother: After cooking, wipe the countertop with a soft cloth to remove salt, acids, or oils immediately. This prevents any deposits from forming, which can be much harder to clean later.

If there are small scratches or dull spots, gentle wax-based polishes can help. However, use them cautiously and always test first in an inconspicuous area.
