Hello everyone,
I have a Hemnes dresser set from Ikea that is heavily affected by stains. Specifically, these are wooden surfaces with the classic white lacquer finish, some of which have deeper discolorations that cannot be removed with regular wiping. I’m mainly interested in how to remove these stubborn stains as thoroughly and gently as possible without damaging the surface or removing the lacquer. Does anyone have experience with effective cleaning methods specifically for Ikea Hemnes furniture with heavy stains? Which products or home remedies would you recommend, and are there any tips that work even on dried or old stains? I want to avoid the furniture developing unsightly spots or a dull surface. Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions!

I would start with mild rinse water and a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, you can use a mixture of water and a little vinegar, but be careful not to use too much. Afterwards, wipe thoroughly with clean water to avoid any residue. Physical effort usually works better than harsh chemicals.
Hello Bafafu,
First of all, I understand how frustrating stains on Hemnes furniture can be. The surface is often coated with a thin layer of varnish, so care is needed when cleaning.
Here is the recommended approach:
- Always start with mild cleaning, such as using a microfiber cloth and lukewarm soapy water.
- For tougher stains, you can make a paste from baking soda (baking powder if baking soda is not available) and a little water. Apply this carefully to the stains, let it sit briefly, then wipe it off thoroughly.
- Alternatively, melamine foam sponges (also known as "magic erasers") can be used, but handle them with caution as they can easily damage the varnish layer.
Important: Always test on an inconspicuous area first to avoid damaging the surface.
If the stains are very old and deeply set, follow-up treatment with furniture polish or oil may help restore the shine.
I hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

In my experience, that stuff and even vinegar are often just too gentle if you don’t want to repaint everything right away. You could also try isopropyl alcohol or even very fine sandpaper on a microscopic level – of course, with a delicate touch.

Muscle power usually helps more than aggressive chemicals.Well, I see that a bit differently. Muscle power is fine, but without the right product, it becomes a Sisyphean task. You have to specifically target the material the stains have set into – otherwise, it only results in superficial cleaning. Ikea Hemnes is not premium-grade wood, but rather easy to maintain, yet also sensitive to improper treatment. So you need to proceed smartly, not just scrub hard.
