Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some IKEA Hemnes furniture, specifically dressers and nightstands made of solid pine with a painted finish. I have pets — cats and a dog — and I’m concerned about how to clean the furniture properly and gently without damaging the surface or causing unpleasant stains.
My main questions are:
- What cleaning products are recommended for painted wooden furniture when dealing with pet-related dirt like fur, scratch marks, or small stains?
- How can I remove pet hair effectively and permanently without roughening the surface?
- Are there any special cleaning procedures or precautions for IKEA Hemnes furniture when living with pets that I should be aware of?
I really want to avoid cracks or discoloration caused by improper care. Any helpful tips or experiences would be much appreciated!

What exactly does "mild dish soap-water mixture" mean? What should the ratio be and how wet should the cloth be?Very good question, tumisael!
In practice, I recommend the following mixture ratio: use about 1-2 drops of mild, fragrance-free dish soap in approximately 500 ml (17 fl oz) of lukewarm water. This is enough to thoroughly remove dirt without leaving harsh residues.
The cloth should be only lightly damp—just moistened and well wrung out so no drops fall. This helps avoid excessive moisture on the painted surface, which could cause damage over time.
Then gently wipe the affected areas without sanding, and immediately dry with a soft, dry cloth to prevent any liquid from penetrating the wood.
Also: please do not use abrasive sponges or rough cloths, as they can scratch the paint!

- Use a high-quality, lint-free microfiber cloth whenever possible.
- To remove pet hair, a static brush or a rubber glove also works well, as these pick up the hair effectively without damaging the wood.
- With regular maintenance using a suitable furniture care product, you can also make the surface more resistant. Be sure to use a product approved for lacquered wooden furniture – otherwise, you risk discoloration or residue buildup.
If cats frequently scratch the furniture, a protective layer of clear furniture wax could help. This not only reduces scratches but also makes cleaning easier.
Hey tumisael, great question and it’s wonderful to see how carefully you’re taking care of your furniture!
I can only say: patience pays off! With the right care, Hemnes furniture still looks quite fresh even with pets around.
My tip: make cleaning your furniture a small ritual, maybe in the morning or evening. Every now and then, use an anti-static brush to remove pet hair, and give your furniture a proper treatment once a month with a gentle furniture oil – this creates a nice protective layer and makes the wood shine.
I’ve enjoyed my furniture for many years despite a bit of cat chaos. You can do it!
