Zar-benHello everyone,
I have a specific question and I’m hoping to benefit from your experience and expertise: What is the most effective way to clean Ikea Hemnes furniture when living with pets?
Here’s the background: I have several cats that regularly move around my home, and unfortunately they sometimes leave marks on my white HEMNES cabinets—whether it’s scratches from their claws, fur, or occasional stains from nose or paw contact.
I definitely don’t want to damage the furniture, as it is made of oiled or lacquered wood, and I want to clean it as gently but thoroughly as possible.
Does anyone know the best cleaning methods that protect the wood furniture while reliably removing pet-related marks?
What cleaning products or home remedies would you recommend? Should I apply anything afterward to protect the wood surfaces?
I appreciate all tips, experiences, and any warnings you might have. Thanks in advance!

I usually just use a microfiber cloth slightly dampened with lukewarm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. This removes pet hair and light stains quite well without damaging the surface. Then I wipe again with a dry cloth.
For tougher stains, I have used diluted vinegar essence (not too much, diluted with plenty of water) as a home remedy because it has antibacterial properties. But be careful: vinegar can harm the wood finish, so don’t use it too often or too concentrated.
If you want to refresh the surface a bit, special furniture oil applied directly to the oiled wood works well. It protects the wood from moisture again and brings out the grain nicely.
So – mild cleaning is best and regular, with minimal experimenting. Your cats will thank you, and the furniture will last longer. 😊

I also recommend the following:
- Immediately blot stains with a dry cloth to prevent absorption
- Avoid abrasive or alkaline cleaners, as they damage the oil layer and expose the wood
- After cleaning, apply furniture oil to restore the protective layer
If you apply the furniture oil less frequently, regular gentle cleaning is important to remove dirt and pet hair.
Additionally, for households with pets, I suggest gently cleaning upholstery and using soft covers on furniture to minimize mechanical scratches.
This significantly affects the longevity of the surface.

Does anyone know the best cleaning methods that both protect wooden furniture and effectively remove pet marks?I have two dogs and several HEMNES furniture pieces myself, so I understand how annoying it can be when hair and small dirt marks constantly appear on the furniture.
What has helped me is regularly using a small vacuum cleaner attachment with a soft brush to gently remove the hair first, without rubbing.
Then I wipe the surface with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner specifically designed for wood. I always try to wipe from top to bottom.
After cleaning, I allow the furniture some time to dry before putting items back on it. Depending on how much wear the furniture experiences, I treat the surfaces with wood oil or wax about once every 4 weeks.
Sometimes, especially for heavily affected spots, it helps to lightly sand the area with very fine sandpaper (grit 320 or finer) before applying oil. But only if the surface is visibly damaged.
I want to emphasize that proper care and cleaning not only maintain the appearance but also extend the durability of the furniture, especially with lively pets around.
