Hello everyone, I currently have several IKEA Besta furniture pieces in use and am looking for an effective method to clean them quickly while being gentle. The surfaces are usually made of melamine-coated particleboard or painted finishes. Which cleaning products and methods would you recommend to remove stubborn dirt without damaging the surface or leaving unsightly streaks? It would also be helpful to know if there are any special tips for caring for edges or glass fronts. Thank you in advance!

For quick and gentle cleaning of IKEA BESTA furniture, I recommend starting with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth to remove dust and light stains. Melamine-coated surfaces are sensitive to harsh cleaners, so neutral cleaning agents (pH-neutral) are preferable, such as a mild dish soap diluted in water.

For stubborn stains, I suggest carefully using a non-abrasive sponge. Glass fronts can be cleaned with a standard glass cleaner and then polished with a microfiber cloth to avoid streaks.

Avoid cleaning products containing alcohol, abrasives, or ammonia, as these can damage the surface. Gentle care is also important for edges, as the coating may be thinner in these areas.

Hello Danlo47,

Regarding your question about how to clean IKEA BESTA quickly and gently, I would like to add some details that are often overlooked:

The main focus should really be on protecting the surfaces, which are often coated with only a few tenths of a millimeter (a few thousandths of an inch) thickness. These melamine resin-coated chipboard panels are relatively scratch-resistant but sensitive to mechanical stress and the wrong chemicals. Therefore, the choice of tools and cleaning agents is essential.

Procedure:
- Start with a dry microfiber cloth to remove dust and loose particles; this prevents micro-scratches.
- For tougher dirt, I recommend lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap or neutral dish detergent, just as Blavin suggests.
- However, avoid making the cloth too wet, as water can penetrate the joint edges and cause swelling over time.

Edge cleaning:
- The edges of the BESTA are often more delicate due to their manufacturing process. Therefore, I advise against using sponges with abrasive agents here and to completely avoid mechanical cleaning methods like steel wool.

Glass fronts:
- When cleaning the glass fronts, it is advisable to use glass cleaner but be sure to polish it afterward with a lint-free cloth.

Do you have specific stains or frequently occurring dirt that are particularly problematic? That would help provide more targeted tips.

Good question! I do occasionally get grease stains on the white surfaces, especially near the kitchen. In addition, dust tends to accumulate on the dark frames and edges, making it quickly noticeable. With the glass panels, I have the issue that fingerprints often remain, even though I use glass cleaner. I’m interested in whether there are any special techniques to remove stains more effectively without having to treat the surface too aggressively.

For grease stains on melamine-coated BESTA surfaces, I recommend placing a cloth soaked in warm water with a little dish soap on the stained area for one to two minutes to loosen the grease. Then gently wipe it off. Working quickly helps avoid letting it soak too long.

For stubborn fingerprints on glass fronts, a lint-free microfiber cloth slightly dampened with a mixture of vinegar and warm water (1:1 ratio) works well. Vinegar helps break down grease and leaves no residue if you wipe carefully afterwards.

For dust on frames and edges, antistatic cloths or slightly damp microfiber cloths are suitable, as they trap dust effectively without rubbing.
