Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several Ikea Besta furniture pieces made from a combination of wood and melamine. Since I want to clean the surfaces gently and without causing damage, I’m wondering: How should Ikea Besta furniture made of wood and melamine be cleaned properly to avoid harming or permanently damaging the surface?

I’ve done some research, but it seems that different materials and surface treatments are important here—for example, melamine coatings versus solid wood or veneered surfaces. Are there gentle cleaning methods suitable for all these types?

It’s important to me that no harsh chemicals are used that could dull or dissolve the surface. Also, how do you handle stubborn stains or water marks without risk?

I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences to help me keep my Besta furniture looking great for a long time.

Could you briefly explain why the combination of care products can be problematic?

Certainly!

Melamine surfaces are coated with plastic and are sensitive to oil-based or alkaline substances that can be found in wood care products. These products often leave a residue on melamine or can damage the coating, causing dull spots or discoloration.

Wood care products, on the other hand, are formulated to support the breathability and moisture regulation of real wood. Their ingredients protect and nourish wood but are ineffective and potentially harmful to melamine.

Therefore, always choose cleaning and care products suited to the specific material and avoid mixing them.

For cleaning, warm water with a small amount of mild soap is sufficient for both surfaces. After wiping, dry thoroughly.

For stains, treat locally; do not rub the entire surface with stronger agents.
