Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some BILLY shelves from IKEA and now want to clean them without damaging the surface. The surfaces are laminated, and I am unsure about the best way to proceed, especially regarding the use of cleaning products.

My concern is that aggressive cleaners or too much water might harm the material or dull the finish. Are there any specific methods or cleaning products that work particularly well?

Additionally, I am interested in any tips on how to gently remove minor scratches or stains without scratching or damaging the surface.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey nertil33, it’s great that you want to learn more about this! 🙂 I just cleaned my BILLY shelves recently and really wanted to protect the surface.

My tip: Use a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth – it’s important that it’s not wet, just a little moist! This helps prevent water stains and keeps the surface from softening.

I recommend a mild soap solution, with just a small amount of dish soap diluted in water. Never use harsh all-purpose cleaners or abrasive products – they can damage the surface. After cleaning, immediately wipe with a dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture!

If you have stains, try carefully removing them first with a rubber eraser (yes, really!). That worked very well for me with stubborn marks.

Don’t get discouraged – it’s fun once you get the hang of it! 🙂

I agree with Declan55 but would like to add a few additional points.

The surfaces of BILLY shelves are usually melamine-coated, which makes them relatively resistant to moisture; however, the coating can still be damaged by improper cleaning.

Do not use abrasive scouring pads or harsh chemical cleaners such as ammonium hydroxide or acetone, as these can dissolve the surface.

The recommended procedure is as follows:
1. Remove dust with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth.
2. For stains, use a mild soap solution (e.g., a few drops of pH-neutral dish soap in water).
3. Wipe the surface afterward with a soft, dry cloth to remove moisture.

Scratches are more difficult to repair since the melamine coating is thin. Small scratches can sometimes be concealed with a white furniture touch-up wax stick.

I would also recommend testing the cleaning method on an inconspicuous area before treating the entire shelf.

Hello nertil33,

I’d like to provide a detailed answer to your question because proper care for BILLY shelves can be a bit tricky if you want to maintain the surface over time.

BILLY shelves are usually made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating (laminated surface), which is very durable but not indestructible.

When cleaning, keep the following in mind:

- Avoid excessive water: Since particleboard absorbs moisture, too much water can cause warping or swelling. Therefore, only use slightly damp cloths.

- Avoid scrubbing with abrasive cleaners: These can mechanically damage the melamine coating, causing permanent scratches or a dulling of the surface.

- Avoid harsh chemicals: Solvents or strongly alkaline cleaners can dissolve or discolor the surface.

A possible cleaning process would be:

1. Remove coarse dust with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth.
2. Remove stains: Mix a few drops of neutral, mild dish soap (e.g., baby shampoo) in lukewarm water, lightly dampen the cloth, and gently clean the area.
3. Wipe dry immediately to prevent moisture damage.
4. For small scratches, you can try special kits for laminate or furniture surfaces—these often contain waxes or polymers that fill minor scratches.

By the way, if you work intensively with the shelf and might move it around, I recommend applying felt pads underneath to avoid scratching the floor!

One more question—how old are your shelves exactly, and have you noticed any particular stains or scratches you’re referring to? This would help tailor the recommendations more precisely.

Dilute mild all-purpose cleaner with water and wipe only with a damp cloth. Then wipe again with a dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals. Use furniture wax for small scratches.
