Hello everyone,
I have several Billy shelves from Ikea at home that now have various stubborn stains. These are not just simple dust or water marks, but some are from felt-tip pens, grease, or even sticky residues from stickers. My question is: What is the best way to clean Billy shelves with these types of stains without damaging the surface? Are there any proven cleaning agents or techniques specifically suited for these situations? I am especially interested in which cleaners are safe to use and which ones should be avoided, since the surface is usually painted or melamine-coated. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

By the way, special adhesive residue removers from the hardware store also help with sticky residues. However, be sure to check the product information to confirm it is suitable for coated furniture.
Simply apply the product to a cloth, not directly onto the shelf, and then gently wipe.
If unsure, test first on the back side.

If stains are deep or very stubborn, you can also gently use an eraser sponge (for example, a so-called "Magic Eraser").Exactly, that’s a very good tip! I’d just like to add that the "Magic Eraser" is actually a micro-sponge with a mild abrasive effect. Therefore, you should be really careful with smooth, painted surfaces and only rub lightly.
I’ve also noticed that the shelves in Billy-type bookcases are often more delicate than the side panels. So it’s better to be especially careful there.
If stains still remain after all cleaning attempts, an alternative could be to replace the affected boards, if possible.
I can understand how frustrating it is when Billy shelves develop specific stains despite careful maintenance.
Sometimes it helps not to get too upset and to see the stains as reminders of everyday stories. Of course, a clean piece of furniture should bring joy in daily life, but perhaps you can also learn to live with the appearance?
In any case, I wish you good luck with the cleaning and hope the tips here are helpful. If you want to discuss particular types of stains further, feel free to continue the conversation.

One more small tip from me: If you want to maintain the surface a bit after cleaning, sometimes a wax-based furniture polish can help. It preserves the shine and provides some protection.
But be careful: This should definitely be applied only after stain removal, not before. Otherwise, stains might get sealed in.
And yes, “less is more” applies here too – a thin layer is completely sufficient. 😉

Hello everyone,
Thank you very much for all the tips and advice! The suggestions about the "Magic Eraser" and the order of treatment (first removing stains, then polishing) were especially helpful for me.
Yesterday, I tried using the acetone-free products and worked carefully on the area around the shelf. Most of the felt-tip pen stains are gone. For the sticky residues, I will try the adhesive remover today, of course following the recommendation to test it on the back side first.
One last question: How long should a freshly cleaned surface ideally be left to dry before putting weight on the shelf or placing items on the shelves? I want to avoid damage caused by moisture.
Thanks and best regards!
