Hello everyone,
I have a Billy shelving unit from Ikea at home that I would like to make childproof, especially the doors. My children are now very curious and increasingly try to open the doors, even though I store items there that are not suitable for them.
My question is: How can I securely lock the Billy doors so that they are truly childproof, without having to hassle with changing a lock every time? Are there proven, practical methods or special child safety devices that fit well? What do you use – for example, magnetic locks, specific child locks, or other solutions?
It is important to me that the doors remain functional and that I can easily open them when I need to put something in or take something out.
Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

They are not visible from the outside, and most kids don’t figure out the magnet trick that quickly. 🙂 You only need the small magnetic key to unlock the door.
Alternatively, spring catches or even hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro) can work if you want a quick solution and don’t want it to look like a prison. 😉 It’s important that nothing has sharp edges, as children can sometimes pull hard.
Have you tried anything like this before?
Hello Herobla,
I understand your desire for a childproof yet practical solution. Basically, there are several systems:
1. Magnetic child locks: As Wesley mentioned, these are installed on the inside of the door and unlocked with a matching magnetic tool. They are discreet and effective.
2. Plastic twist- or slide-locks: These work similarly to locks on cupboard doors and are quite easy to install.
3. Clamp or snap locks: These can be attached without screws, often made of plastic, and are another option; however, depending on the model, persistent children may be able to bypass them.
It’s important that the safety solution matches the type of door and its use. Bolt locks or keyed locks are very secure but somewhat impractical for everyday use.
I also recommend paying close attention to the installation instructions so you don’t cause visible damage to the Billy shelf – especially if it’s a rental property or similar. If you choose magnetic solutions, be sure to keep the magnetic tool safely stored.
Good luck!

I recommend the following approach:
- Measure the door precisely. Most magnetic locks require about 2-3 cm (1 inch) of clearance between the door and the frame.
- Buy a set suitable for cabinet doors with a hinged design (the magnets and strike plates often have different mounting strengths).
- Installation requires screws on the inside – so it’s best to pre-drill to avoid damaging the material.
Alternatively, clip-on locks that do not require drilling can be used, but they are somewhat less sturdy. It’s important to consider the combination with the locking mechanism; focus not only on the lock itself but also on child-safe handling.
A small tip: If you often misplace things, attaching the magnetic key to a keychain could be helpful.
This ensures usability without causing frustration.
Magnetic locks are the best option. Easy to install, no visible damage. Keep the key handy. If speed is important, there are also clamp locks, but they are less secure.
Exactly. Paxton38 is focused on that correctly.

the security solution must of course match the door type and its intended use
