Hello everyone,

I have been using IKEA Platsa furniture for some time now, specifically shelves and cabinets, which are regularly subjected to heavy use. Since I am not only curious but also value durability, I am interested in how to best maintain this furniture when it is used frequently.

What cleaning products are best suited for gently cleaning the surfaces without damaging the material? Are there any special care procedures for the fittings and hinges? I would also appreciate tips regarding load management and possible adjustments to the modules.

In short: How can I care for IKEA Platsa furniture under frequent use to keep it in good condition as long as possible and avoid any mechanical issues?

Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

Hello albamar,

great topic! For cleaning Platsa furniture, I generally recommend a mild cleaning agent, such as a pH-neutral dish soap mixed with lukewarm water. Avoid harsh cleaners, abrasive agents, or solvents, as these can damage the surfaces. A soft cloth or microfiber cloth works best for removing dust and light dirt.

For the fittings and hinges, you should regularly check that they are still firmly attached and tighten them slightly if they start to loosen. Applying a few drops of a light, adhesive lubricant can help maintain their function, but use it sparingly to avoid contaminating the wood or painted surfaces.

IKEA Platsa is modular and sturdy, but it is important not to exceed the maximum load capacity of shelves and cabinets. It can be helpful to retighten screws after a few months of use, especially if the furniture is frequently moved or heavily loaded.

I hope this helps! If you need more details, feel free to ask.

I agree, less is more! 😄 My cabinet has been sliding smoothly for years because I spray it briefly with a PTFE spray once a year – and yes, I admit I have been a bit generous with it... but hey, no problems so far!

For cleaning the surfaces, I usually use a damp cloth – anything too harsh tends to cause more trouble than it’s worth. And with stains, it’s better to act quickly, otherwise the grime sets in, and then only intensive but gentle cleaning will help.

Oh, and occasionally tighten the screws. Especially with frequent use, things tend to loosen, which can quickly affect stability. So don’t forget, or the piece of furniture might give out sooner or later.

To add to my previous comments, here are some structured tips for maintaining IKEA Platsa furniture with frequent use:

- Cleaning: Use only lukewarm water with a mild, pH-neutral cleaning agent. Do not use solvents, abrasive powders, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the melamine resin surface.

- Surface care: After cleaning, wipe the furniture with a dry microfiber cloth to prevent moisture damage.

- Hinges and fittings: Check quarterly that screws and fittings are tight. Replacement parts are available from IKEA at a reasonable cost if any worn components need to be replaced.

- Load capacity: Follow IKEA’s recommended maximum load limits for each module and avoid overloading shelves to prevent material deformation.

- Mechanical maintenance: Tighten screws immediately on any loose elements to ensure stability during daily use.

By following these measures, you ensure extended lifespan and lasting functionality of your Platsa furniture.

Check quarterly that screws and fittings are secure.

Exactly, regularly tightening them is enough and prevents most problems.

Just lukewarm water and a sponge are usually sufficient.

Use lubricant oil only if hinges squeak; otherwise, it’s unnecessary.
