Jonbalthaz29 Oct 2019 20:37Hello everyone, some time ago I purchased several pieces of furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series – including dressers and nightstands made of solid wood with a white lacquer finish. Now that winter is approaching, I am thinking about the best way to care for these wooden furniture pieces to prevent damage from colder temperatures, heating air, or humidity.
Are there any specific care instructions to follow during the winter? I am considering factors such as indoor humidity, cleaning, and possibly using care oils or wax – especially for Hemnes furniture with the white lacquer finish. I want to avoid the surface becoming brittle or discolored.
Do you have any experience or care tips on how to best maintain Hemnes furniture during the winter? I would appreciate detailed guidance or advice.

- Heating air is like a dry desert for wood, so make sure to maintain sufficient humidity, for example with houseplants or humidifiers.
- I would not recommend maintenance oil, since the lacquered surface protects the wood. Maintenance oils can damage or cause spots on the lacquer layer.
- Treat your furniture to regular cleaning with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner, nothing abrasive!
Stay relaxed, the furniture just wants to avoid a heat attack too ;-)
Good luck getting through the winter!

Hello Jonbalthaz, I’m happy to help you with detailed advice on caring for your IKEA Hemnes furniture during winter, especially the white lacquered surfaces.
1. Humidity: In winter, indoor humidity often drops significantly due to heating, which can dry out the wood in the furniture and cause stress. The ideal indoor humidity is between 40 and 60 percent. You can use a digital hygrometer to monitor this and, if needed, use humidifiers to maintain the level.
2. Cleaning: Use a lint-free, soft cloth that is slightly damp (not wet). Regular household cleaners can damage the lacquer, so it’s better to use mild dish soap diluted in water.
3. Care products: Hemnes furniture is made of solid pine wood with lacquered surfaces that should not be oiled or waxed. Oils can damage the lacquer layer or cause unsightly stains.
4. Temperature: Do not place the furniture directly on radiators or in drafts, as this can harm the wood structure.
By following these steps, your furniture will stay beautiful and durable until spring.

Great topic! I think especially in winter, you need to take extra care of your wood.
You raised a good point! If you keep an eye on the indoor humidity, you’ve already done half the work. I always place a bowl of water on the radiator – it works quite well.
One more tip: if you have candles or scented candles, make sure the smoke doesn’t go directly onto the furniture. It often leaves discoloration, especially on white surfaces.
And don’t worry, Hemnes is sturdy – but a little loving care benefits all furniture!

I’m happy to share my practical experience on this.
Especially in winter, when the heating is on, I often notice small dust accumulations or very fine dirt in the edges of my Hemnes furniture. This can be easily removed with a soft brush or even a microfiber cloth.
I can only agree with that. Unfortunately, I ignored it at first, and a bedside table actually developed minor stress cracks along the edges because of it.
In addition, regular ventilation ensures good air circulation – a real blessing for the furniture, especially during winter. It might also help to keep the room temperature moderate, not too warm.
This way, your Hemnes furniture will stay stable and well-shaped for a long time!
