Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an Ikea Pax wardrobe with a foil coating and would like to know how to properly care for and clean it so that the surface stays nice for a long time without unsightly damage or discoloration. My main question is: Which cleaning products and methods are best suited for the foil coating?

I would also be interested to know what specific care considerations I should keep in mind, such as avoiding scratches, moisture, or chemical residues.

So far, I have read that aggressive substances, like harsh cleaners or abrasive agents, can damage the foil. It would be great if someone with experience could share how to best maintain these surfaces without compromising their appearance or durability. Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello CHENESE,

Regarding the care and cleaning of Ikea PAX wardrobes with a foil finish, I’d be happy to share a few tips to help you enjoy your cabinet for a long time.

In general, avoid harsh cleaning agents such as abrasive cleaners, strong alcohol-based or solvent cleaners, as they can damage or roughen the foil surface. A damp, well-wrung microfiber cloth is usually enough to remove dust and light dirt.

If there are tougher stains, use a mild dish soap solution (about a few drops of dish soap in warm water) and proceed gently. Important: Never make the surface too wet, as moisture can seep into the edges or joints and cause mold or swelling underneath.

An additional tip is to wipe the surface dry with a soft, dry cloth after cleaning with a damp cloth. This helps prevent unattractive water spots or residue.

To protect against scratches, I recommend avoiding rough sponges or abrasive cloths. Sharp objects should also be handled carefully.

I hope this helps you so far. If you want advice on specific stains or other care aspects, just ask!

Hello CHENESE,

I’d like to add a small care tutorial to the explanations provided by uslis47.

1. Preparation: Always start by removing dust and loose dirt with a dry, soft cotton or microfiber cloth. This prevents scratching during wet cleaning.

2. Cleaning: Use lukewarm water with a mild dishwashing detergent (use sparingly). Use a damp cloth, well wrung out so it is only slightly moist.

3. Cleaning technique: Wipe in one direction, not in circular motions, to preserve the natural shine of the film coating.

4. Aftercare: After wet cleaning, always wipe again with a dry, clean cloth to avoid water spots and ensure the surface dries properly.

5. Stain treatment: For stubborn stains like grease or ink, you can apply 70% isopropyl alcohol to a soft cloth and test gently. Be sure to try this first in an inconspicuous area, as some films may be sensitive to it.

6. What to avoid:
- Abrasive cleaners or scrub pads
- Strong solvents (acetone, turpentine, etc.)
- Direct sunlight during cleaning, which can make stains worse

My tip: Regular, gentle care significantly extends the lifespan and keeps the surface looking good.

If you have any questions about stain removal or special care, just let me know!

That's exactly the point! I always make sure to treat my PAX wardrobe as gently as possible. A slightly damp microfiber cloth and a bit of care usually do the trick – sometimes it feels like the wardrobe has its own personality. 😄

A little tip: If you want to be absolutely sure, you can test the cleaning products first on one of the inside panels. That way, you avoid any surprises.

Also, take the time to occasionally wipe the wardrobe with a dry, soft cloth. This removes fine dust and helps prevent scratches.

And yes, moisture is the natural enemy of laminate. So better not leave a wet cloth on it – otherwise, it will look worn pretty fast.

If you’re interested in how to deal with specific types of stains, feel free to ask. 😉

Thank you for this precise tip, fredle! May I ask how long such an alcohol-based solution can be left on the surface without causing damage? And what about using it on dirty handles that are also foil-wrapped—does the same apply, or should one be more cautious there?

Also, I have one last question: Is there a difference in care when my PAX doors are matte instead of glossy foil-wrapped? For anyone interested in this as well, I would like to treat them as gently as possible to avoid creating shiny spots or matte marks.

Thanks everyone for your helpful answers so far!
