Hello everyone,

I want to enhance my kitchen with an IKEA Metod kitchen island that offers plenty of storage as well as space for seating for dining or casual gatherings. My specific question is: What is the best way to assemble such a Metod kitchen island, especially regarding the arrangement of cabinets for storage and the integration of seating areas? Which modules and countertop combinations are recommended, and are there good tips for stability and ergonomic spacing of the seating?

I am looking for well-founded planning that is both functional and visually appealing, and of course achievable with the standardized IKEA Metod components. Does anyone have experience with a project like this or can provide targeted advice on practical combinations, fixings, or accessories? Thanks!

Hello bidra1,

I think your question is very important because a kitchen island with storage and seating is truly a challenge in planning. First, you should consider how wide your island can be. IKEA Metod cabinets usually come in 60cm (24 inches) widths; you can place them side by side to reach a total width of 120cm (48 inches) or 180cm (72 inches), for example. For storage, it’s best to use base cabinets with pull-out drawers, as they offer a lot of space and are easily accessible.

For the seating area, I recommend allowing the countertop to overhang on one long side by about 30cm to 40cm (12 to 16 inches) so that legs fit comfortably underneath the table. Countertops made of wood core or stone work well for this and can be reinforced with additional supports to prevent sagging.

Also, make sure the island is stabilized with angle brackets or extra dowels attached to the ceiling or floor if you want to include seating that will be used frequently. Regarding ergonomic spacing: 60 to 75cm (24 to 30 inches) per person is a good guideline.

If you like, I can also help you put together a list of parts. How wide and deep should the island be at most? And how many seats are you planning?

Hey bidra1! Great idea with the Metod kitchen island 😍 I built one myself and can only say: it’s a lot of fun and adds a ton of convenience!

It’s important to use high-quality drawer units. I have the 60x80 cm (24x31 inch) base cabinets with soft-close mechanisms—they’re very sturdy and quiet. For the seating area, I extended the countertop on one side by 35 cm (14 inches). This way, you can easily slide bar stools underneath.

One more tip: instead of a standard countertop, go for a thicker one, like 40 mm (1.6 inches). It looks more premium and also gives you extra stability.

Go for it, it’s going to be awesome! 🎉

Hello bidra1,

I would like to add that with Metod kitchen islands, it often makes sense to use different types of cabinets, such as narrow drawer cabinets combined with wide pull-outs. This increases flexibility for various storage needs.

If you want to include a seating area, you should adjust the countertop height—standard is 91 cm (36 inches), but for seating, a bar height of 106 cm (42 inches) is also possible, which is more comfortable for stools.

Another consideration is whether you plan the island with a plinth or on casters; casters make the island mobile, but you then need to ensure stability.

Plan carefully in advance so that storage and seating spaces work well together.

Thank you for your reply, TEBILO! The kitchen island should be about 180 cm (71 inches) wide and 90 cm (35 inches) deep, with seating space for two to three people being ideal. I would set the countertop height to 91 cm (36 inches), as that seems to be the standard.

I would like sturdy drawers for cutlery, pots, etc., as well as a small storage area for extra dishes.

What do you think—is it better to combine several smaller cabinets for this size or use larger cabinets? Also, do you have recommendations for suitable countertop materials that are durable, especially since part of the surface will be used for seating?

For the optimal implementation of an IKEA Metod kitchen island with storage and seating, there are a few key points to consider:

- For a width of 180 cm (71 inches), combining two or three Metod base cabinets of 60 cm (24 inches) each is suitable. This allows flexible choices of different drawer types.
- To integrate the seating area, it is recommended to let the countertop overhang by 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) on one side. It is important to reinforce the overhang with appropriate supports, such as brackets or special tension fasteners.
- Standard countertops have a thickness of 38 mm (1.5 inches); options with 60 mm (2.4 inches) or more are better suited for seating areas due to the increased load.
- When choosing the material, pay attention to scratch resistance and ease of maintenance. Laminate countertops are durable and cost-effective, while solid wood looks more premium but requires care.
- Ergonomic spacing for seating is 60–75 cm (24–30 inches) per person, so a 180 cm (71 inches) width is ideal for three seating places.

I recommend reviewing the exact configuration with the IKEA planner before purchasing to ensure all modules fit together and you get the correct connecting fittings.
